Intermittent clicking from driver's side front suspension/wheelwell

Gents,

A month ago, I replaced the OEM CV axles on both sides because the boots were torn and leaking. During the install, I tore the boot for the driver's side CV axle. This last weekend, I replaced the driver's side CV axle with a new replacement CV axle.

Everything buttoned up and went back together just as it should. However, now, when I drive I get an intermittent clicking or popping noise. It only happens one or two times as Im driving straight - its not a continuous noise, and it doesnt occur when Im turning. Just when Im driving around 30 mph or so either accelarating or decelarating - I randomly hear a pop or two. I can feel a slight thump under my left foot as it rest on the foot rest next to the pedals. For example, on a 10 mile trip, I might hear the noise randomly 10-15 times. I cant recreate it and it doesnt happen under specific conditions as far as I can tell.

When I put everything together after the CV install, everything look good with no obvious tears, leaks, or breaks.

Any suggestions as to what to check? Could this just be a bad chinese CV axle right out of the box?

Did you torque everything to spec or the ol' pull untill it stops?

might want to do a retorque.

How's your stabilizer bar linkage?

was it actually bad chinese junk, or rebuild units? cause you may have answered your own question

Im a torque nazi - everything torqued to spec from the FSM:

LBJs - 166 ft/lbs
Axle nute - 173 ft/lbs
caliper bolts - 91 ft/lbs
wheels bolts - 95 ft/lbs.

These are new CV axles from the Advance Auto / Carquest house brand (Carquest/Tough One). Naturally, I suspect the CV axle, but wonder if it wouldnt make a consistent noise if it was a bad CV axle.

Recently changed my CV's using the same Carquest axles and the passenger side boot split within a week and was clicking. Returned it and asked the counter guy to cut it open and there was minimal grease. Less than what I would expect even after a boot split.

Save your stock Toyota CV's so you can use them as cores for one of the company's that rebuild them. You will be replacing them again in the future. My plans are to pull the CQ cv's when coilovers, UCA's and wheel bearings are all replaced at the same time next summer.

Mike
Mike,

What did your click sound like? Was it a consistent clicking centered on the rotation of the axle or was it just random?

I have an intermitant sound too, but thought it was a wheel bearing. Can you wiggle your cv shaft in and out at the wheel end?

Consistent. It sounded like a worn CV. Once I saw the split boot and grease leaking it was replaced since it was brand new.

Guys,

Sometimes, the simple things are the problems that you overlook. My problem appears to have been the mud guard flap (that the previous owner or some goober working on the truck previously tore) flapping around and smacking the frame and/or driver's side floorboard. I pulled the remnants of the flap out and have not heard the 'click' over the last 10-15 miles of driving:

This was my issue that I had on the SUV. I just changed clips and put that grease in there and waalaa!

The flaps seem to be an ongoing issue but there is a place that has thicker rubber --> Heavy Duty Replacement Splash Guards
