Engine Knocking noise

Good afternoon,

I have a 2007 4Runner V6 with 145K miles. Regular oil changes and the only major repair I’ve done is the alternator.

I was on vacation for a week so my truck hadn’t been cranked for 8 days. When I cranked it today I heard about 3 seconds of knocking noise from the engine. I gave it some gas then turned it off and cranked it again and didn’t hear the noise. I turned it off and cranked it a third time and didn’t hear the noise.

But the noise was alarming enough and loud enough for me to worry that something might be wrong.

I know this is vague info but any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I get a little knocking noise on my V8 on cold starts. Well, it's kind of between a knock and a tick. No help here, sorry, but mine's been going on for a few years like that, only when cold, and no problems. Goes away quickly, but I'd love to know what it is.

My 07, v6 with 201k miles on it will do the same thing if I let it sit for a few days. It's normal.

I’m going to let it sit until Monday morning and will try and record the noise and post it here. Thanks for your replies.

Nothing to be concerned about. It’s the oil that has bled out of the galleys during long periods of sitting. You get some play in the bearing clearances when you go back to start it because the oil pressure is still building from refilling all the drained galleys. There’s enough residual oil on the bearing surfaces to lubricate until the pressure rebuilds.

What filter and specific oil brand are you running? Some filters do a better job of anti-drainback valve design, which reduces the time it takes for the engine to build oil pressure. Also, some oils cling better to the ferrous metal engine components than others.

For example, Toyota filters I've used have been still full of oil on the "dirty" side of the housing after sitting upside down on the drain pan for a week or more...the anti-drainback valve (ADBV) holds oil very well. I've seen other brands that dump out completely under same conditions, the ADBV just doesn't seal and the oil empties past it.

Let us know what you're running.

Did you ever figure out what the issue was? I have a knocking sound on my 4.0 240k miles as well. It goes away after the engine is warm.
