Instead of spending the 6-10k getting the LS to play nicely, why not just dump it into turning the japanese muscle your 4Runner came with into a monster. Its theoretically a good starting point, all iron with some thick cylinder walls. Throw in some internals and add a supercharger w/10 psi of boost, should be good for at least +200hp (400whp total).

The transmission would probably need to be upgraded at 350-400whp anyway. Add $2-4k.

The unique factor alone would be worth any extra cost over the LS swap.

Although I personally have not had any of my Chevy friends have issues with the 60's in their vehicles. I guess it's the same as I don't know anyone who has had a v6 head gasket blow out but you hear plenty of stories of it happening.
Every 60 blows up eventually. Typically right at the 200k mark too. It blows even faster if you have any upgrades to the engine for added power.

I guess the real point of saying swap the trans is it would be far easier to do the swap with a Chevy trans rather than try to get the Toyota and Chevy systems to interact.
Insert whatever flavor trans you so desire.

There's a guy on Youtube doing this swap into an early Tacoma, I think he is 4-5 videos into the swap right now.

Guessing you dropped the whole Toyota driveline out and went with GM?

Did you tie into the factory ECU at all?

Dash work?

FYI the sun shells break on the 4L60E if you put any decent amount of torque on them. Did it with a 4.3 S10 Blazer, so I know an LS would break it in short order. Trans has to be completely torn down to replace it. Don't know about the 80s though.
