V6 4th gen on 35s - Happy with your 4.56, 4.88 or 5.29s?

Looking to regear. Seems like most with this setup are going with 4.88s. Anyone with 5.29s have input or anyone with 4.88s wish they went with 5.29s?

Vehicle will be 10% hwy 10% city 80% off road. Eventho its mainly off road, I don't want it to be horrible on the hwy getting to the trails.

Any input appreciated. Thanks!

5.29s I would wager would be way too much. I don't think I've seen anybody with them even the 03-04 v6 guys with the 4spd from the factory. Too bad you already have ARB lockers, probably could have saved some money...

I daily drive mine (V8 though) interstate and city 50/50 and it's really not too bad unless its windy. Would I regear if I had the money? Yes, but max of 4.56s and mainly because of a few long trips and for the rock crawling benefit. Do you have 35's now?

If you were mainly offroading, and driving a short distance to get there, regearing may not be worth it except for the increased torque while doing the offroading. (If you were rock crawling)

I haven't regeared yet so I'm not the most experienced on the matter, but even with your V6, you could easily try the stock gears until you've decided on what you want, unless this is the point where you are at now. My brother's FJ (V6) with 34s is a bit slower than mine.

There is a couple people that have regeared with 4.88s that commented in this thread if you want to try and pick their brain:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-ge...ide%2A%2A.html

The main thing I'm going off of was there was a guy on the FJ forums that said he had 4.88s then installed 4.56s and said the 4.88s were too high. It is likely nobody will give you a definitive answer partially because they haven't tried more than one gearset and partially because everybody's rigs and expectations are different.

Hoping to have my 35s on in a couple weeks so I'll be able to give you a more definitive response at that point, but I love my 4.88s. Really "woke" the v6 back up with the amount of added torque. Crawling the same trails as I did on stock gearing was a cakewalk in comparison. RPMs are high on 33s at highway speeds, but that should come down when the new tires go on.

I went 4.88s due to all the added weight.

Demello front bumper with winch
Custom rear bumper with swingout
Dual batteries
Roof rack
Front to rear skids
Sliders
Heavier wheel/tire combos

I'm a heavy ***** and even before I blew up my rear end I was looking into gears because of how hard the v6 was starting to struggle with all the weight.

Thanks for the input. Seems many are happy with their 4.88s. Leaning towards that as of now. I guess 5.29 isn't too common?

The only reason I bring up 5.29 is hearing those with 33" tires who enjoy 4.88s. But probably even with 35" tires 5.29 is overkill? The ability for low speed crawling and extra torque sounds great when 80% of my driving is off road, but I don't want a rig incapable of highway driving.

I'm not even sure 5.29 is an option for our rigs.

I'm dedicated off-road now... no daily driver duty and I was considering going more aggressive on gearing than I need.

I don't really have plans to move up to that large of a tire, maybe a 33" later, but I am on stock gears on my 4speed v6 currently running a 32" mud terrain.

I really could get away without any gearing, but by plan is to go to a 4.56 with the same tires to balance it all back out.

A 4.88 for me would be like a 5.29 for you (assuming that exists)... It would end up taking away from the balanced pep-up I was looking for.

I'm sure 4.88s would be a lot of fun being a 4 speed v6 but I still have to drive freeway to get to where I need to play. If I had a trailer for this thing, I would be all over a more aggressive gear ratio.

For those who regeared, what are your highway rpms like?

On a true 33" I'm at 3k rpms at 80 on 4.88s. based off others experience I should drop back to 2500 rpm at 80 with 35s. I'll have real world numbers on a couple weeks. Waiting for my shocks to get back from rebuild then I'll be putting everything back together including the 35s.
