Running Board Removal w/o Front Mud Flaps and Rocker Panel Corrosion/Rust

I am entertaining the idea of removing my running boards. For those of you without running boards and removed front mud flaps, have you noticed rocker panel rust?

The running boards do a great job of deflecting road debris/dirt/sand from the side/bottom of the truck which is the main reason mine are still installed.

Running Board Removal w/o Front Mud Flaps and Rocker Panel Corrosion/Rust

I’ve only had my running boards off for a couple months now so I might not be much help compared to some, but I haven’t noticed any corrosion or rust on mine (so far). I have however ran without front mud flaps since I got my 4R though, they weren’t on it when I bought the rig.

If you do remove your running boards, a good tip I learned from another thread recommended putting the bolts back in after removal so no water/dirt gets up in there and creates corrosion/rusting.

I haven’t had my running boards on for some time now. However, I do still have my mud flaps. I haven’t noticed any rust or anything forming, but that could be due to the mud flaps. Overall, I’m a fan of the 4Runners without the running boards and a leveling kit. In my opinion it should come like that from factory. But to each their own!

since you live where there is winter. if you take the running boards off keep the mud flaps or invest in sliders that have a tread plate to protect to rockers other wise you will have issues within a couple of winters. From personal experience it is not cheap to fix the rockers. mine is still in the shop getting this repaired. and the cost is way more than mud flaps and sliders.

You won't notice the rust immediately. But 5+ years down the line is when you'll notice it rotting out faster than others.
