06 4runner engine completely destroyed! Is it even worth fixing?

My wife's 06 4runner's engine is toast. Somehow there was a leak in the coolant and it made the engine overheat and completely seize. Mechanic said there was most likely a rust hole in the engine block or coolant line that finally gave way and now the block has a huge hole in it.

The mechanic could only find two possible engines in the province (Alberta) for the vehicle. They are still shopping around for us. With labor it would come to around $4000 Canadian for the engine replacement then the cost of all new fluids.

The 4runner has just over 220k kms on it. We recently had to replace all the suspension, TPS sensors, and a few others for it to pass an inspection. I'd hate to have to part with it because of all the money we had just put into it, but at this rate is it worth fixing? Your input would be greatly appreciated!

I would say it all depends on, one rust, how bad is it or not, second if rust isn't an issue if you can get a much lower mileage engine then I would do it.

Another option is put the $4000 towards another similar year model that needs the parts you have put on the present 4runner and use those parts to fix the new one, then sell the old one for scrap and or part it out to get some more money out of it.

But in the end only you and your wife can answer your question.

Agree with @AuSeeker & I would add start checking wrecking in the states(ebay) ! Maybe find something in Wash. st. Of course shipping might be $$ but might find one cheaper, less miles !

Shipping to Canada would be really expensive $$$$$$. Can anyone recommend a good site to look for used engines? Couldn't find much on eBay at the moment.

Thanks for the help! It's our primary vehicle so we don't really have the time to drive to the states to get anything or to wait forever for it to arrive over the border. I did find some in Canada, so I can look into that.

If you decide to go with an engine replacement, I don't know how interchangeable these are, but I found a 2007 Tacoma engine in Devon with 136k.

You might also search for FJ Cruiser engines if they're compatible.

Best of luck!

I do believe that both Tacoma and FJ Cruiser engines are compatible, but I would check with your mechanic to be sure.

You should be able to swap in any 1GR-FE, im not sure where you are in Alberta but in calgary there are a few 4th gens for parts, might be able to get one out of them

Keep this in mind, I remembered reading it a few days ago in another thread. This comment is from @BlackWorksInc

“Conversely if you're swapping in another 1GR-FE, you need to make sure its the same year as there is a difference between some years that was never properly explained by Toyota (one member mentioned newer 1GR-FE's in the 4th Gens had a 3 wire Camshaft Position sensor and different VVTi assemblies and this caused an issue with getting the engine to run right for him.)”

OP: realize your rig has an 2004 1GRFE engine. In 2005, it was slightly changed. I've also read in threads that if you swap out the engine, you MUST get a year equivalent engine. I would say look for a 2003 or 2004 block. AS far as being the same as the Taco/FJ, I would stay away from that just in case something small is different.

Blackworks would be able to give better/more detailed info on this. Good luck!!

You could probably get a hold of a wrecking yard or salvage yard and see what they say. I know they have a system that shows them which engines are compatible with what.
