2008 V8 Sport Edition with Tow Package. I can fit a 32" BFG KO2 under there and the pan hard bar rubs it on rare occasion. I am hesitant to throw a 33" under there when I upgrade in a few weeks.

Pan Hard bar is going to be the main issue, not the two hitch.

EDIT: Tow hitch is a close second after getting under there over the weekend.

Just to clarify, did you get the 33 to fit?

V8 Towing Package Spare Tire Size Question

FYI- the Curt brand tow hitch is a direct bolt-on replacement for the OEM hitch and maintains a 5000 pound towing capacity. It has more clearance... I am able to fit a new fully inflated 275/70/17 BFG KO2 in the spare location on my 04 Limited after replacing the hitch. $170 from etrailer.com

Pretty sure the V8s have a 7,000lbs towing capacity. I’m not sure people are going to want to downgrade to 5,000lbs. Also, some are saying a 275/70/17 (32”) tire fits and a mildly worn and under inflated 285/70/17 (33”) tire may fit. It seems the jury is still out on the 285 though

I can throw my 33" new BFG KO2 under there this weekend and see if it rubs. Will report back next week.

@randy88fj62

I am currently encountering this issue myself - I have 285/70/17 E-rated Wildpeak AT3Ws and panhard bar is definitely being rubbed. Including a picture.

Should I just put it on my Sherpa roof rack for now and ratchet it down and over time as I do 5-tire rotations and it wears down, I may be able to deflate it a bit and fit it better? Have you come to any good solutions?

A friend told me I could potentially air down the spare and put a ratchet strap around it to keep it away from the pan hard bar.

The ratchet strap is a good idea. It'll compress the tire a bit.

bump- any updates?

I have the 4.7 and towing package. Would love 33's or as close to them as possible but keeping the spare in the factory location is a must

Does anyone know the difference of the clearance of the factory tow hitch for the v8 03-05 v 06-09?

I am specifically asking for clearance reasons because I too want to size up and see if AT LEAST a 275/70/17 would fit in the factory spot?

06 SE v8 with towing here.

Ahhhh yes....the question that's been asked for close to 15 yrs now.

And the answer remains the same...265/70/17 (BFG KO2).
There are a few things under there that impede...like the rear frame-mounted tow hitch, the panhard bar, and one or two spare tire braces. In fact, I think it was a couple yrs ago that I inquired about deleting those braces and the tow hitch for more room, but was told its a no-go.

For gaining that extra 1/2" of ground clearance, there's no way I'd consider anything other than keeping the spare underneath. If I wanted to go much bigger than 33", I'd look at a new rear carrier, but then that opens op a whole new realm of issues.

FYI the hitch on the '03 V8 is a smaller tow hitch.

4wheel parts says that is only 31.6" That would be disappointing. Might look at different hitches but don't want to give up capacity,

Ya it IS disappointing lol. With 2" CO lift in the front and probably 3" in the back w/Icon's dual-rate 3" springs, my 4Runner def looks under-gunned with the OEM wheels and BFG 265/70/17's, especially when I'm empty in the back. If I ever decide to get a rear tire carrier, or somehow one of you rocket scientist engineer forum guys can figure out a way to reasonably get a larger tire below, I'll upsize. But for now no way do I want to screw around with upsizing and having to carry the spare on roof or inside. My 265/70/17s have gotten me everywhere I've wanted to go in Death Valley, Panamint Valley, and Eastern Sierra mountains, and at this point of my life it seems like I'm doing less technical stuff and more traveled trails and fire roads.
