I am trying to decide what suspension system to buy. I am looking at the Icon Stage 4 system (with rear remote resi) but also looking at building my own kit.

If I were to build my own kit I would not be able to buy the track bar kits and a couple other things but if but if I put together my own kit then I would be able to have remote reservoirs for the front and the rear.

Should I go with the stage 4 kit and get everything that I would need. Or should I go with building my own kit and get remote reservoirs for both the front and rear?

If you ever think you'll need remote resi, do it now. Then you add the links later. If you buy without remote resi now, you'd be rebuying shocks later to add.

Hey Sam, this is probably one of the most thought over topics here. If you break it down, there is no difference in price if you buy an ICON Stage Kit or individual pieces. We suggest buying in pieces and building the kit that suits your needs best.

A couple things we suggest:
2.5 Rear Shocks > 2.0 Rear Shocks, especially if your are hitting the trails!
While the Delta Joint is the new popular option, you can save some money buying ICON uniball arms.
If you are budgeting between a Stage 3 and Stage 4, we suggest springing for the components found in the Stage 4 (2.5 Resi Rears) and just leaving off the rear lower trailing arms for now. Think of it as a Stage 3.5...

Just my opinion, but when moving up to this level of shock absorber I think one of the biggest advantages is adjustability, and you need remote rezi in order to get those adjuster knobs, even if you don’t need the thermal overhead of the remote rez.

You could start with a kit, but getting the right shocks out of the gate is the big ticket item that will save you time and money in the long run.

Probably an unpopular thing to say, but without the rez, and without the adjusters, there really isn’t much difference between a 2.5” ICON shock and a Bilstein 6112 in terms of real world performance.

Everything else like links and accessories can be easily added later.

As some have already said, if you get the resi, get the compression adjusters.

I found a little bit more money in the budget and was able to cut out a few things. I am most likely going to go with a 6.5 kit and get the compression adjusters and wait for track bars etc. later.

One other question. If I only had the money to do one compression adjuster then should I do the rear or the front?

I bought my shocks used with only the compression adjuster on the front. Did I wish the guy I bought them from had them in the rear? Yes. Did he wish he had them in the rear? Yes, that is why he sold them, to buy new shocks with adjusters fr/re.

Really if you wanted a nice budget setup get the front without resi and get the 2.5 rear without adjusters.

But to answer your question if you carried a lot of weight in the back (trailer/dirtbike/coolers) then the adjusters in the rear would work well. But if not my adjusters in just the front seem to work well enough.

Get the adjusters front and rear. End of story. I had them on the rear. Wish I had them on the front. Had an issue with a shock and Icon was great to work with. While they had it I had them upgrade my fronts to have adjusters and so glad I did. It's so nice to adjust for on or off road especially with all the weight I have.

I’m not going to tell you what to do with your money, this stuff isn't cheap, but I’ve gone through this exercise enough times to know what I would do.

It’s different for everyone, but I like the ability to tune the ride to my preference. If you plan on using the truck in a variety of conditions where you might be loading it up, or wanting to drive fast, adjusters front and rear is what you want.

Being able to tune or adjust one side of the truck sounds great until the other side can’t keep up with the other. Just from personal experience, your driving is going to match the capability of the weakest component.

I have adjustable Icons all the way around along with Icon uniball upper front arms and Icon rear lower trailing links. I feel no need for the other links. I keep the front on 5 and the rear on 1.
