Flash Runner's: Halo Install Writeup

Alright guys, so I've seen some members on here with Halo's and had a hard time finding some detailed writeup's on how to do it. So I figured I'd try my best to document my install and share with you guys.

I decided to do this bc I needed to open my headlights up to get moisture out of them, and I figured I'd black them out and install the Halos... I didn't really want to throw a lot of money at this right now, so I went with some cheaper halos off of amazon, as opposed to some of the nicer ones out there. Here's what I used (also, it's best to test your halos before you start this project, it'd be a real shame if you finished just for them to not work): 100mm Amber Halo Rings

Here's a before picture of my headlights:

IMG_1450

I used this writeup before to give me the idea of how to do it: Morimoto Halo/Angel Eyes Writeup (s/o to @T4RNightHawk )

First off you'll need to get your headlights out and open them up, this the the writeup I used to do that: Blacked out Headlights 06'

Upon getting my halos, I noticed they had some small tabs on the back:

IMG_1453

These needed to be removed, so I just used a grinding wheel bit in my drill to flatten the surface:

IMG_1456

Next you need to size up where you want your halo (I used 100mm rings, in hindsight I'd use 90mm ones for a better fit):

IMG_1458

You'll need to mark where you need to drill a whole in the bottom of the circle to allow for the wires to pass through the front face plate. To do this, use about a 1/4" drill bit (I had to work it a bit, hence the sloppy hole). Once this is done, you will need to mark your drill holes for the hanging wire used to secure the Halos in place. I used the smallest drill bit I had (1/16 I think?) to drill these. I made a hole in each side of the ring in 3 different spots (6 holes total) to hang the halos:

IMG_1459

After I drilled these holes, I cleaned off the plastic shell and painted it black. Once that was done I came back and placed the halo in position, running the wires through the bottom hole. I then cut up 3 pieces of hanging wire and put each end through the sets of mounting holes. you'll need to twist them a little while the halo is facing up to secure it into position. Once this is done, you can flip the plastic face over and secure the hanging wire is tight (i just kept on twisting it until it was tight and just compressed it all together):

IMG_1462

IMG_1463

This is how the halo should look at this point:

IMG_1464

Now you will need to drill a hole in the back of the housing allowing the halo wires to pass through. I drilled mine in the bottom of the housing, under the low beam projector:

IMG_1465

Once this is done, you'll need to re-install the front plastic cover (where the halos are mounted) back to the lens. Also, you need to reinstall the blinker/parking light and it's wiring to the housing. Then you'll need to keep the headlight "put together" as you run the halo wires through the back housing in the hole you just drilled.

This is where you have a decision to make on your wiring. There is 3 wires (Red, Green, White/Blkstripe) in the DRL/Parking light connections. You'll connect the Black halo wire to the White/Blkstripe. Now the Red wire:

If you connect Red Halo wire to Red DRL/Blinker wire (what I did) --> acts as the DRL and will blink with the blinker, however it will turn off when the low beams come on

If you connect the Red Halo wire to the Green Parking light wire (In theory) --> acts as the parking light and will be on the whole time (even when the low beams come on) but will not operate as a blinker.

I used "Quick Splices" to connect the wires:

IMG_1466

IMG_1467

At this point, I held the headlight together and plugged in back into the 4Runner to make sure the halo was wired up and working. Once this is done I reassembled the headlight and baked it back together to seal it back up. After I resealed it, I siliconed the hole I drilled for the halo wires to make it water tight, as well as wrapped the quick splices and the whole seal around the headlight in electrical tape:

After (I also gave the headlights a good cleaning restoration as they needed it haha):

I hope this write up helps anyone wanting to do this mod!! I just have a few notes in hindsight post install:

- These particular Halos are not as bright as others, and the DRL's, so they don't show up great in the direct sunlight
- I used 100mm rings, for the low beams the 90mm would have been a better fit
- I clipped the Halo Red wire in to the DRL Red wire, I wish I clipped it into the Green parking light wire to keep it on all the time
- I wish I got the 90mm for the lows, and used the 110mm(?) on the high beams for the two ring look....but I'm not opening my headlights up anytime soon after I did this haha
- This took me about 6 hours, so be prepared....but I can also work slow sometimes
- EDIT: I also realize this makes completely separating the black plastic cover from the back of the housing impossible without un-doing the wiring....good thing I don't plan on needing to do that, but just a warning for anyone doing this

nice install.

i dont put halos when i got my lights retrofitted, one more part that will cause problems later, heard alot of stories where the light dont light up anymore and non working lights on the ring itself.

@riceandpho Thanks! Yeah, I've heard about those too. I just figured if I ever go down the path of a retrofit (which I intend too bc the stock projectors are not very good), I'd just get a new set of headlights to work on, as to not hinder the use of my runner. This way I'll never need to open them up again (hopefully).... plus the newer look is an outlined LED beam around the edges of the headlight, maybe I'll do that instead of halos next

@LucasAry Thank you, I appreciate it! This was my first write up so I was trying to be as detailed as I could get

might be a little bit better if you notch out a little part of the shroud to make it center. like this guy
Halo Angel eye install Dark Knight inspired

i would do a small ring that centers the low beam shroud, or go all out, but having angel eyes to me is getting played out, too many people adding them in now a days. i do like the starry night halos.

Glad my writeup helped. And yea the sizes are 80 mm and 120 mm if you want a perfect fit.

I do remember seeing that thread now when I first looked into the Halo's. I loved the color matched look, but only on the darker colors, not my white.... I might go about making that notch, or just replacing them with the right size (and adding in the second halo) if I ever open these back up.... the plan is to be able to do a good retrofit on a new set by them time I would "need" to open them up.

The irony is, I was just thinking that more or less. Mostly how even halos are now dated and are a aftermarket look, as opposed to OEM since they are all using the LED outline look I mentioned before

Love the look of these and your halo wiring advice really helped me out when installing some new fog lights with halos! I ended up wiring my "red" halo to the green parking light wire since I wanted them running all the time. Which they do! At least whenever the lights are in anything but the off position. I was wondering though, do your halos blink when you hit the lock/unlock button on your fob? I was kind of hoping for this effect but it doesn't work with the way I wired it.

Thanks! I’m glad it helped. Yes my halos blink hitting the lock and unlock, this is bc it mimics the blinkers. My halos are on all the time except when my low beams are on, and/or my parking brake is engaged.
