Nice!!!! Stoked your going this direction, what a fun build!! and - destination KOH!!!! Even more fun.
Will follow along intensely. I have my 08V8 and have intentions of heading this way- life will require me to go a bit slower than your pace, but it is "the end product" and possibly competition, but moreso capable go everywhere fast vehicle. Right now its good at mobbing around in the desert. Have a 1st gen for the rocks for now.
What is your KOH or crawling background? Ever been out West to play? Whats your budget and "racing plan"? It gets expensive quick.
What are your rear suspension plans? 4WU? i have a helluva connection for you
When your ready to come play in the rocks, hit me up! I will spot, co-dog, pit, or just drink cocktails and roust you thru the trails!! Know the areas (somewhat)
And im a paramedic, so that comes in handy sometimes ;)

Aaron, thanks for the amazing post. My DD is a 1st gen Turbo!
Rear suspension will be done by Wyatt at Rock Solid Toys - Wyatt has been an amazing sponsor of this build and friend.
The rear Currie RockJock 60 is ordered! Stay tuned for more details from Wyatt on the rear setup.
And - as a side note - I love Brian, but 4WU doesn't currently make any products for the 4th gen. Believe me, I asked
My co-driver is a Fireman and Paramedic - you have to meet him at KOH in Feb! You two will hit it off. And we'll definitely need your help out on the lakebed!
Right now we're still working on sponsors for tires, wheels, armor, batteries, safety gear, vehicle wrap, and comms. And also trying to finalize details with a few "locked-in" sponsors.
Follow us on FB and IG and give our sponsors a shout. And ping us with ideas.

We'll have a Currie RockJock 60 with ARB in the rear with an Atlas II. Gears will be 4.56 - we'll explain why later in the build.
Hint: We're retaining ABS so we can keep ATRAC and adding an ARB in the front only to be used in worst case scenarios. The front is going to be complex - we need strength while fitting the 4600 rules. And RCVs will be involved. I've probably given away too much .

Yes, it's serious! No solid axle - it would be a disadvantage for this build and it wouldn't be permitted in the rules anyway. We specifically chose the 4th gen 4runner so we could run Long Travel IFS with Coilovers in the front within the rules.
We're essentially taking 4400 Unlimited Main Race class technology (not quite, but close) and bringing it to the 4600 Stock EMC Class! It has never been done before - it's going to be awesome! Solid Axles are quickly becoming Old School, endangered technology in the Unlimited Class - it's been mostly dominated by IFS the past few years (with quality exceptions like Randy Slawson and Erik Miller of course).
With this build, we'll be the first to try New School tech in the EMC, which has been dominated by Solid Axles thus far. That, among other things, is what is getting my sponsors so excited.
Check out my summary of the 4600 Stock Class rules - I think it's the 3rd or 4th post of this thread.

IFS! IFS! IFS!
I'm sure Wyatt knows what he's doing, but in my mind the rear needs to be double-triangulated 4-link since you are removing the stock fuel tank.
I will be watching the KOH race this year for sure.

Well, looks like your getting lots of play on all the other forums too!! As well as the standard beating on Pirate!! It used to be really rough in the old days, now its even tame there
Pretty damn sure RST will pull thru, they are putting out some top shelf builds for the Toyota crowd lately.cant wait to see her all stripped down!!
To me- It all comes down to the front end!
Long travel with coilovers naturally! Id run 3.0 coils if it were me.
LSK and Solomotorsports make some wildly impressive kits built for racing
That IFS front carrier, standard Toyota 8"? sticking with an OEM Toyota version or going to do it right?
Id love to see a ProRock60IFS slipped under our Runner. Center Mounted of course
OR----- an IFS housing mated to a Toyota 10.5 that would be F'ing the Bomb!!
RCV IFS Yota axles do not have a popular following. There have been countless issues reported on vehicles running them with most guys even swapping back to OEM toyota CVs or OEM rebuilds by CVJ with chromo inners. (thats what im running now after easily popping my CVs with a front locker) Most reports are on FJCruisers.com and tacomaworld.com
SoloMotorsports even swaps out the Yota CVs for Dana's
Then theres that Toyota steering rack! replace that mofo!
Cant wait to see what you guys come up wither and how it survives getting used.
Document it all!!!! Pics and specs

Exactly! Either double or single triangulated.

Thanks - you certainly know your stuff.
Wyatt is a pro and the rear end is covered. But we've got just as much horsepower on the front. Steering and IFS will be stout.
Specifically hitting the diff, we cannot change the space we have up front per KOH 4600 rules. I originally was aiming for a Currie F9 or a D60 center, but both Wyatt and I confirmed there is no way it'll fit. So right now our plan is 4.56 gears (keep them big and strong) in the stock 8" clamshell, retain ATRAC, stout shafts, and a selectable ARB up front for worst case scenario.
And, I'm sure most of you have guessed by now - but we'll be running an Atlas II 4.7 case to give us low gearing even with the 4.56s in the rocks. Still working with Advance Adapters on the full specs, so hold tight on the T-Case for now.
Fortunately our core build team has a ton of experience with the stock Toyota 8" and thinks this setup will be strong enough for 35s running 2wd in the desert and 4wd with ATRAC and the rear locker in the hammers. I just have to be careful when I turn the front locker on vs. winching.
Most we have heard of have been breaking shafts on 40s or 42s vs. the actual gears. While we'll have shafts covered, we know the front diff will be the weak link, so we'll have to be smart.
More to come on the steering, IFS, and axle shafts. One hint here: The steering, IFS Suspension, and Axle Shafts are NOT available on the market today .

Thanks everyone! More parts arrived over the weekend, but I had to work on my wife's LX and my 1st Gen 4Runner. Hopefully we'll close out most of Phase I: Engine Performance by this weekend!

Are you planning on keeping the body/accessories mostly stock, or are you waiting on something before you rip the body and undercarriage apart?

See the 4600 rules post above. I cannot touch the sheet metal - all stock except doors can be half doors and tailgate can be cut.

What I mean is, are you going to totally strip the interior, gut the doors, windows, cut the cats off, spare tire carrier, etc. etc.? Are you waiting for something before you start lightening it and removing all the useless items, or are you keeping everything as stock as possible?
