255-70R17 Tire Questions

For those that have run 255-70R17 on the V8 model,

1) How do you like them overall?

2) Do they hurt your power noticeably?

3) Will it fit in the spare tire location?

I have not l looked at 255/70/17 but the 245/70/17's are usually stock diameter or close enough. I will be running 17x7.5 wheels and I like more sidewall support than one gets with a 265 wide tire. Of course exactly how a tire is made, rated as in XL, LT, E, etc....has to be considered. AND, look up the real specs as much as you can find as section and tread width can be considerably different than the sidewall designation leads one to believe.

Lower weight is always better as well as long as the tire is made well and suites the intended purpose so I am looking into XL more than E rated for my towing needs as not to severe off road use.

So far the generic spec I find is 31" which is half an inch bigger in diameter than the stock tires but I will look up real specs as well and crawl under my 4R and take a look and post what I find.

UPDATE:
Cooper AT/3 is 31.2", 2469 load rated, 40lbs so not to bad on weight and optimum rim width is 7.5 inches.

UPDATE 2:
Falken Rubitrek 245/70/17 is a very good fit on a 17x7 and will work well on a 7.5, 114 XL rated, snow rated, according to their website pretty low noise, good all around street and off road capable, I am going to take a good look at them as have liked their tires quite well over the years.

The 255/70/17 is SL rated, weighs 3lbs more, 31.1" tall, .3" wider tread, I think the 245 is the better tire.

RUBITREK A/T TIRE | Falken Tire

-------------------------------
Original post, mostly

I like a little stretch to give better feedback, which is why I am looking into 245s as well.

I am looking into 17x8.5 or 9" wheels with maybe a 275 wide but have to see what tires I can find first.

I have the original 17's, Tundra split spoke with AT Tires and yesterday picked up a mint set of 8 hole take offs that barely were used. I might be selling some of these if not all of them depending on what tires and wheels I end up running.

I will add more as I find the info, tirerack is a great place for many tires but I often go to manf sites and when narrowing things down I compare both if available.

I ran that size for 6 years.
I did like them, could not tell a difference on power, and it does fit in the factory spare.
You will need to move the fender liner a little forward. When I was on 275/70/17 I was much happier with a little more height and width. Not sure if that size fits in the spare though.

I'm running the BFG Jeep takeoffs 255/75R17 on SR5 snowflake 17x7.5 rims. So far with my tiny 1" or so suspension lift (Tacoma/FJ parts) I haven't had any rubbing issues.

I like the BFGs fine but it was more about bigger tires for cheap. Lots of Rubicons and Willys have this size stock and the mall-crawler crowd goes big right out of the gate. I got all 5 (spare too) for $500 with something like 80 miles on them.

Power....they're barely bigger than stock and you've got the V8 so you should be fine. I didn't notice any significant difference with my V6.

It just barely fits in the spare tire well if I pull it hard against my trailer hitch while winching. There's maybe 1/4" of clearance to the panhard bar.

I'm running 255/75-17 with a 2.5" lift and they fit perfectly with no rubbing. Spare tire fits good as well.
I did notice a drop in the 1-2 MPG drop.

Overall, I do like them.

If you have a lift go bigger. I regret that size, when it comes time for new tires I will either jump up to 255/85 or 285/75.

I've got 3k miles or so on my 255/75 Duratracs. I do have a bit of rubbing on the mudflaps when turning at certain angles (probably due to the wheel offset), which should be an easy trimming fix. My spare fits nicely, and only noticed an approximate 1 MPG drop since switching from 265/70 Cooper AT3 (all hand calculated and adjusted for size). I haven't noticed any loss of power, but I don't drive it like a rented Corvette either.

Thanks for all the replies.

One more question, does the 255/75R17 fit in the spare tire location?

Yes, so as long as you're okay with deflating it a "smidge" to fit nice and tight...

I'm running a BFG MT in the same size and it fits in the spare tire location. I haven’t tried putting anything larger but it’s starting to feel like I am at the limit.

If you want to tow something, you might have to loosen the tire, put the hitch in, and then tighten it back up for the clearance. Other than that, no issues.

I keep mine at working pressure and it still fits nicely.

I ran the jeep take off KM muds for a few years in the size. The tire themselves are terrible on the street and excellent off road. I have a few pics in my build thread you can see

The size was a nice upgrade over stock, looks good and requires minimal trimming or modification with a spacer lift.

I have the v8, I didnt notice much power loss at all

I believe it does fit in the spare location.

That is actually the tire I am now considering. You said the spare fits. Do you have to air it down or do you run it at full pressure? Do you have the frame mounted hitch?

Same exact experience with me. Except that my spare took some careful persuading to get it in there without deflating.
