Black interior project! More updates soon!!

After about a year of consideration I decided to move forward with blacking out my interior. I started on some smaller pieces today and plan to do the rest over the next couple weeks when time permits and the auto parts store restocks duplicator Vinyl and fabric dye haha.

More progress 5 cans later...

After starting on the trim from before I went ahead and did the entire rear area which used up almost 5 cans. I believe I need another 4-5 for the front. The carpet just soaks it up. Anyway here are some pictures. I think another reason it took so many cans was because I used it inside the trim too along with the carpet under the rear cargo deck to make sure it looked factory

The 2 tone in my sport edition kinda bugs me. I like the way this looks alot, at least from midway down. Are you doing the cieling and pillars

Hey thanks! I'm only doing from the half way point down. I wanted it to kind of match the 5th gen 4runner's with their 2-tone (tan up top and black below) Right now what I have left is the passenger compartment carpet, the door panels, lower dash, seat trim and lower center console. I did the rear first as I felt it was going to take the most product and time

I really like this!!! I'd love to black out my interior, but sadly it's shades of gray. Oh well. If I find one with a black interior at the junkyard the plan is to get what I can and do what you're doing to the rest.

Reminds me of when I did it to my 3rd gen back in the day.

Recoloring interior of 3rd gen 4runner...PICS included

I was debating on doing it in a few years. Replacing the full carpet front and back and maybe painting some of the panels full black. My seats are already black. Most cars come with grey upper panels even if the lower interior is black. Only my RS4 had black upper and lower, and that was a custom order car to get a full black interior.

Looks great. You might want to look into SEM interior / trim paint too. Holds up a tad better than duplicolor.

Thanks! and yeah to me it looks good with the contrasting upper color. and I'll have to check that out. Have you had bad luck with duplicolor?

I looked into SEM too when doing mine. I l too believe its a better product and they have more choices match exact factory colors as well. However, the lower price and local availability of the Duplicolor won me over as being "good enough." I have no complaints on mine as its still holding up well everywhere except the lower door trim pieces under repeated hard boot scrapes.

Looks good btw.

Yeah that was the reason I used duplicolor as well as any auto parts store near me has them. And I’m glad to hear that. The only reason I was hesitant for a while was because of worrying about durability so I’m glad it is holding up!

More progress made!

Made more progress yesterday! I dyed the car seat trim and lower trim up front. The only think left is the door panels and lower dash. The carpet up front I did a little different. I used RIT fabric dye in hopes that the carpet would stay more soft. Here are the results! (Heads up in some of the pics I wasn’t done yet haha)

I didn't have any issue with duplicolor I just like the quality of SEM more. I was going to just order a case whenever I got around to doing it since I'll also need SEM trim paint for all the faded exterior pieces as well.

Someone told me back in the day they used the RIT fabric dye in a spray bottle to get all the spots done that aren't caught in the washer. I used a washer to dye my carpet :lol I decided that if I do want black carpet next time, I'll just order it online. I just got replacement carpet for my 3rd gen for 100 bucks but I haven't tried to install it yet. I'll report back to see how the quality is afterwards. My old carpet was all moldy and shit so I threw it out a while back.

lol nice! After several days the carpet is still really soft. The only down side is that the dye takes a really long time to fully dry.

When my wife accuses me of having taken apart every piece of my 4Runner, I can show her your posts and what that really looks like.
