4Runner write up in Off Road Magazine

Was at Borders yesterday and the latest 4WD and Sport Utility magazine (or something like that) has started a new series on the 4th Gen 4Runner.

They bought a 2003 Limited 4x4 and will start modding it. So over the next year, we'll get to see it transformed from bone stock to something a little better. They're not intending to turn it into a rock crawler, or do any extreme stuff.

They're open to suggestions from readers on what to do to it.

Will be interesting to see how the 4runner gets changed.

I saw that as well and you are correct, it was in 4 Wheel Drive & Sport Utility Magazine.

I'll have to pick up a copy and start to follow it.

Do you guys follow any other magazines ??? I get the Toyota owners 4wd mag. I get Truck trend . I've stopped the "4wheel & Off road magazine" & the "Fourwheeler" mags due to they suck IMO.

I actually like this magazine. A couple of months ago they had a cover story on off-roading in Colorado. A decent write-up and lots of great pictures. They covered the trails, and highlighted Black Bear Pass. Apparently there is a white-nuckle turn on that trail, but the reward is a spectacular view. The pictures were worth scanning.

The mag is not too Jeep heavy. In that issue, they also replaced the suspension of a new FJ Cruiser. Did something with a Suzuki Samurai as well.

I only bought that issue because of the Colorado article - I'm into exploring/expedition off-road adventures not extreme stuff - so it was perfect for me. Gives me something to consider should I make it out there.

JB - That's a great shot. Can't believe you got out to take a picture.

PaulSula - I take it you've done this as well.

So, question for both of you: did you go out alone - meaning just you and your 4runner ?

My main concern of going alone is that some trails are so desolate, that should anything happen, no one could help you.

Just wondering. Thanks.

I was with my ten year old son who took that picture. None of the trails we did was all that desolate. It would have been very unlikely not to see another vehicle on the same day as any possible breakdown. Even so, I was very well provisioned.

Four wheel touring is alive and well in Colorado and especially that area. Actually, I wouldn't have minded a tad more isolation as it was, and my feeling is the trails see more usage every year.

I do, however, do a lot of solo offroading in desolate places. Being well provisioned and informing people of my intinerary beforehand goes a long way in providing peace of mind. Heck, if you're well provisioned, a breakdown would be just like camping.

Never was paying attention to this magazine. I'm reading Toyota 4WD Owner, 4Wheel and Off-Road, FourWheeler. Is 4WD and SUV better then above mentioned? What do you think? Just asking for personal opinion.

No, I was with my wife. We also ran into a few people while on the passes. I would say that as long as you take it slow, you won't have any problems. It's also a good idea to hope for the best, plan for the worst. That's what the bikes were for...
