Freeway speed limits.. are they 80+ in Texas? Not sure if the 4th gen v6/v8 will have much difference at highway speeds since the v6 will be well into it's powerband.
Yeah I'm in Texas, there are some hills but nothing too bad. There are a few toll roads that are 85 MPH and I some state highways are 75/80. Yeah I agree that I'm sure both could handle it, I'm just considering long term reliability. It seems like there is some problems with the V6 head gaskets that make me a little concerned. That reason alone I might consider a V8..

Only reason why I probably wouldnt, is because the V6 has the timing chain. They are "supposed" to last the life of the vehicle. When they start elongating/snap, they do an incredible amount of damage/very expensive to replace.

I've never heard of anyone's doing it, my brother's 07 FJ timing chain elongated, and he replaced it himself instead of spending the 2-3k at the dealership to have it done.

I think I'd rather just deal with a belt replacement every 100k and call it good, but to each his own.

Go check out the high mileage threads on the 4th gen area of this forum.
Both will go to half million miles with preventative maintenance. Especially since your vehicles won't have to contend with real rust.

I don't believe there is a significant difference in the cost of ownership between the v6/v8 over the course of 2/300,000+ miles. I have nothing but praise for the v8.
FWIW, while I have the exhaust tick, it's not annoying enough to justify the cost of replacement. In the event that I do replace it, I'm lusting after the DT headers and exhaust replacement.

In the land of bagged milk, our recently abolished emissions testing system forced me to fix a leaking catback. Such a disappointment because the v8 sounded GLORIOUS at WOT and on startups with the leak, but stayed stock-quiet once at highway cruising speeds... I do not believe the v6 could be described as glorious.

Haha this is a great response. Thanks for taking the time. Yes I agree that the cost of maintenance is probably not all that different, the added tow capacity is a very tempting.. I have heard some of the V8 exhaust clips and they sound great on 4th gens. It is good to know that the cracked headers is nothing but annoying. It can be lived with until it gets replaced. Now the potential V6 head gasket issue.. That can't be lived with.

Well that would be an absolute nightmare to deal with.. Let's start knocking on wood that never happens!

I had the V6 in a Tacoma, have the V8 in a 4Runner. The V8 is way more fun to drive and gets the same or better mileage than the 6 did.

I haven't seen bagged milk in ages. Must be an Ontario thing. ;)
