cost of suspension install

hey all - i have an appointment with longtime mechanic i knew in HS and was told for them to install my 5100s and OME springs (new kyb top hats too) that would be in the $800 range...does this seem fair assuming it goes smooth without running into any hardware issues?

too bad i didnt have the time or second vehicle to do this with my buddy Jay like we did with my wrx. the shop im going to lifted my old tj jeep but i dont remember many details from it.

thanks,
tom

Honestly that seems a bit high to me. I was quoted $320 for 4 hours of labor at $80 an hour. I think that is pretty crazy to instal just springs and shocks. If they are removing XREAS maybe but that is still rather high.

Sounds extremely steep to me too, it's not very much work and for an experienced mechanic I'd imagine it wouldn't take more then 5 hours max. The rear can easily be done in an hour with some simple tools and the factory jack as long as you have a means of getting the rear about 24 in off the ground, which you can get some 6 ton jack stands tall enough at harbor freight for only 50$. So you could always try to save money and knock out the rear on your own then have someone else do the front if you're not comfortable. YouTube is your friend

I am lifting my Friday and got quoted $500 for installing ToyTec 3” lift with rear springs, 4 new Bilstein 5100 shocks, install tires, and alignment.

This is in South Carolina. I also got quoted upwards of $1100 so I had to call around. I got a good reputable shop to get me an appointment

My guy said he would do it for $250. All 4 shocks and springs. $800 seems steep.

I bought new 5100's and 5th gen trail springs, sway bar bushings and new suspension hardware, had a shop rip out my entire 100K mile Xres system installed a heat shield that fell off last winter and did an oil change for 320 bucks recently... honestly i would say 400 would have still been very reasonable and this was in Boston MA... not some rural town.

im about to get a call back from a more local shop than the one who told me perhaps around $800...i have been dealing with the shop about to call me back for minor service work but since knowing this shop for almost 8 years, they are fantastic service and tight knit, considering it is a MIDAS. i wouldnt ever recommend someone go to a shop like this for anything too crazy, but the one i have dealt with is seriously good, even their online reviews are 4.5/5 stars thoroughly and james has told me they can definitely do the install etc. etc...so i said heck, give me a rough price. i might even be able to dump off my sr5 5 spokes with pretty well used nitto crosstreks to one of the guys there's tundra for $200 - ill be running a fj 6spoke setup. they called me back and quoted me $580 for the entire install now that im typing this.

question:
are there any little things i could give a heads up for either shop for installing my 5100s, OME springs, KYB top hat kit to either of these shops? any particular care for not breaking sensors? installing front Old Man Emu springs on a particular side because one is longer than the other? i know the cam bolts might be tough or have to be cut but mine dont look aweful and i have been spraying wd40 ahead of time. thanks everyone.

-Tom

Where in MA are you? If you are near Boston, i can highly recommend T&T Auto Repair, young guy owns it, they all speak poor English but are very handy with the old wrench! they are located at 41 Garden St, Everett, MA 02149.

If you are not close, i would suggest that, depending on how much rust you have and or if the suspension has ever been worked on that you buy some penetrating oil and soak all of the nuts that will need to be accessed for the suspension install (and then the alignment following) to give the shop a fighting chance at removing the bolts in a timely manor.

I know when I dropped my car off, i told them to keep it for the week because i knew it had 100k miles of North East winters that have settled into each and every bolt of the old Xres system.

Mind sharing what shop you're using?

Everett is too far for me as im on the south coast of ma but thanks regardless. I will continue spraying it down. They will have the truck for 5 days at least...will they be able (they do alignments there too) have all extra bolts in case any are seized? Thanks! Btw I dont have xreas to deal with

I think $500 is around the right amount BUT....$800 is not unforseen because sometimes one bolt/nut tears into labor time.

I've done suspension swaps on many 4th gens and its incredible how long it can take on some trucks and not on others.

Best of luck.
