I bought my 4Runner used several years ago and am just now needing to put air in my spare tire. Apparently the seller did not include the entire spare tire tool kit (I only have the jack assembly). Does anyone know the product number of the exact tool I need just to lower the spare?

I recall it's just a box end. Always thought about trying a long 3/8" extension and ratchet. There's a couple 3rd gen posts that confirm it works. And someone chimed in saying it worked for their 04 T4R. **Note, try this myself when I get home. Hahah.

Or try the junk yard. Pretty sure most Toyota trucks and truck based SUVs of the same vintage share the same tool kit.

18" 3/8" extension will work--that's what I'm using since my runner didn't come with the tool either.

Found this one for a Tacoma. Not sure if it is the same as one for a 4runner, but the price for the one you found doesn't seem excessive.

I can say for sure that the 2004 tools will work on any 2003-2008 (4th Generation) 4Runner. Might extend to others but I don't know.

As for the price... I guess it 's not unacceptable. Strikes me as high, but how much is knowing you have it ready to go worth? Offer them $30, or $50 to include shipping. The alternative is to be a bonehead like me and hold out for a better price (maybe someone doing a partout will let you have it for $10) and then get a flat tire while waiting on that deal.

Since the tools are missing, its likely that spare hasn't gone up or down for quite some time. I'm going to strongly recommend that the first time you lower it (assuming it doesn't misbehave) get a spray can of white lithium grease and absolutely bathe the assembly as you work it up and down a few times. The mechanism, the cable, everything that moves. Maybe slide a slotted circle of cardboard onto your spare tire to catch all the drips. That cable likes to tangle over time and surface rust makes it worse.

My latest situation has me trying to figure out how to connect the spare kit tool ... I will be looking for a photo of it assembled. I remember when I had a flat, the roadside guy cranked the tool counter-clockwise.

However, at Tire Kingdom today, the guy who installed my two new tires was not able to use my tools to raise the spare mechanism back up! He didn't install the tool right or I think he just put it in at an angle when I remember that it's supposed to be straight. So the stupid spare mechanism (that the tire must attach too) is now dangling almost to the ground because he cranked it too low but didn't put it back up.

Anyone care to help me figure out how to crank the thing all the way back up into my truck? Thanks

This same exact thing happened to me when I had my tires done... they turned the thing back and forth trying to experiment with it and got it all tangled up. Took me a while to sort it out, but I earned my doctorate in Tire Winchology that night.

Hopefully you have a garage if you live near me, because it's cold wet and miserable out there. Put some work gloves on. Get a friend if you have one willing to help. You're going to get under the truck and have the friend crank it a little this way and a little that way while you pop the plastic cover off the winch and try to untangle it. Once you get under there, you'll see which way it's supposed to go, and what they did with it.

One of the tricks is that you'll need some weight on the tire holder platform otherwise it's just going to flop around on you. Maybe bungee-cord a brick to it or something. You'll figure it out.

I guarantee you they used a power tool to try to force it up, then it got stuck so they turned it the other way, then it got tangled, then they all shrugged said said "it was like that when you came in."

Get under there and take the white plastic cover off and send a pic of what you're seeing. Maybe I can walk you through it.

Edit: Just re-read your post. Start with the weight idea, or if you have a friend helping, use your hands to put a little tension on the cable as your friend cranks. Once you get it sorted out, lower it down again and glop grease on the cable and mechanism like it's whip cream on pumpkin pie. Raise it up again, then lower it and attach the tire and give it a few up-downs to spread the grease.

I am looking for the spare tire tool kit for 2006 4runner SR5. Have checked salvage yards etc. No luck. Any suggestions on where to locate?

Hover on some of the many 4th-gen facebook groups. There's always someone parting out a totalled truck on there.
