Yeah, that is the only solution with this particular head unit. Not a big deal, just extra $$. Console bezels aren't cheap on ebay or elsewhere. Most I'm seeing are over $150.

The ATOTO A6 Pro is an android tablet which has been customized for use in automobiles - you can use it as an android tablet OR you can have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. All the other name brand stereos that are limited to their own UI with the option of using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Anybody know about installing this with the Tomtom head unit? I'm sure it isn't, but hoping it's still plug and play

You can see the differences in the attached pics. The first one was with nav or at least non-JBL/RDS.
The second pic is what I have that had the JBL system with RDS but no nav.

@ xtremewlr
found this dash kit after lots of digging. A couple reviews specifically mention this piece working for a 2004 T4R limited w/ jbl and rds. That's exactly what I have. Thought it might be worth checking out!

Nope, that won't work with the ATOTO A6Y, even if you have the same radio/console bezel I have. Your only choice with the ATOTO is to replace that trim piece with the non-JBL or nav one.

So to sum things up, what I understand is with a basic non-JBL/RDS headunit, get the Atoto A6 Pro Toyota unit and it comes with everything you need, plug and play.
If you have JBL, then find a base console or console bracket.
Any others with feedback on the A6? Does it improve on the base headunit sound quality?

With the JBL system you also need an additional wiring harness/adapter mentioned by
@ xtremewlr
above. Just clarifying for anyone who revisits this thread in the future.

Another caveat I have discovered about the non-nav JBL head unit.
Not only is the radio bezel different but so are the HVAC controls. I got a replacement radio bezel off ebay and it fits the A6Y perfectly and there are no gaps on the sides any longer. HOWEVER.... There is still a gap at the bottom because of the different HVAC controls. With the larger JBL head unit, the plastic molding at the top of the HVAC controls extends UP about 1/4" and doesn't extend BACK like the nav or non-JBL head units.
So, off to ebay to find a new HVAC control unit that will finally finish the project. I'll post pics of the difference once I have one.

Replacement climate controls received. Here are the visual differences.
Original to my 4R on the left. This fits the JBL system without nav. The right side is either a standard radio or the JBL system WITH nav. Notice the difference at the top, above the display.
And here is a comparison of the tops from the side. The non-nav fold back and over the top to fill the gap between it and the radio.

Is the top bezel removable so you can swap your old bezel to the new one?

On the climate controls? Possibly, I didn't look at that.
Looking at my original climate control, I would say yes, you can do that. It would involve disassembling the whole climate control to swap out the face, since that is one piece.
So you could buy a cheap climate control, even one that doesn't have all the same functions as your original and then swap the face on them, retaining the functionality of your current one and getting the correct face/bezel for the radio swap.

I have the non-JBL and the A6 Pro Toyota version still didn't fit perfectly because the Atoto unit sticks too far out on the stock brackets.

Interesting. I had no problems with the stock brackets from mine (JBL unit, non-nav) when I did it. All my issues were otherwise noted and resolved with factory parts off ebay.

I emailed Atoto support and they said the A6 Pro Toyota version is not compatible with the 4th gen 4Runner.
I'm really confused. I'm going to return it and go traditional name brand headunit.

Which did you get? This is the one I have installed in my 4runner right now. Fits great.
