4th gen horn vs 5th gen horn
Hey guys, I noticed that Toyota did a change of horn design on the 5th gens and wondering what they sound like.
For those who had a 4th gen and now have a 5th gen, could you share your insights on the matter?
Curious to know if they are louder, higher or lower toned.

The horn on my 2010 trail is weak and wimpy. The horn on my wife's 2018 is fine, but I'm not sure how it compares to the 4th gen horn.

The horn on my 4th gen sounds tough and is loud. I feel like its louder after I removed the covers on the bottom.

I did a part lookup on the 2010's and for some reason Toyota had two versions depending on what edition the T4R was. Just note the T4R comes with two identical looking horns (high tone and low tone) but I'm only listing one for comparison between editions of T4R.
I'm guessing you have the round version?
The wimpy horn is the round one below..
There is also a Limited edition version of the horn as well for the 2010, shown below. Looking up the 2018 T4R, it uses the same limited edition version of the horn, same part number. I think the 5th gens have an option of the round basic horn or the plastic premium horn.
Wondering what the differences are between the 4th gen horn and the 5th gen premium horns...i see they changed the design of the plastic cap that goes underneath between 4th and 5th. Wonder if that muffles it more or redirects...

Have the same ones and love them. Wondering if the 5th are better or just a slight revision of the covers? Wonder if the covers come off on the 5th...maybe too many people were taking them off and Toyota got in trouble LOL
I'm definitely going to take them off and give that a try...

@ SCY7H3
Remember sound is directional, meaning that one way to make things quieter is to deflect the sound, but you also want to project the sound forward from a car and not to the ground. The best solution for a louder horn is to point it forward. But a forward facing horn on a car will get stuffed with bugs and rain and ruin it.
I think the Toyota designers decided to put the deflectors on the 4th gen then made a cheaper version for the 5th.

You're absolutely correct.
Is the 5th gen cheaper as a result of less parts (deflector built into plastic housing) or that it is a cheaper horn altogether?

We have a 4th and a 5th gen. 4th has a real horn. 5th sounds like my Hyundai Tucson. Beep Beep.

Just install a set of Hella Supertones and call it a day, not too expensive either.

On your 5th gen, are they the round metal horns or the plastic premium horns?

I looked at those and figured they'd last a year before the salt spray would eat them alive. Otherwise I've heard these. Though reading into it they're only 300hz for both.

I really don't know. They are hid behind the grille and there is a plastic cover on top and you can't see anything without taking it off.

I checked the parts listing for the 4th gen, and there's only the option regardless of trim to have premium horns. 5th gen had two options which was dependent on trim level. The regular round metal ones or the premium plastic ones.
So for those who have 5th gen with the regular round horns, you can simply upgrade them to the premium ones. The connectors are the same between the two. Simple swap.

stock horns have a high and a low tone.
change it to some hella super tones if you need loud, i have 2 pairs so im louder than the regular 2 horns.
if you can source the gm 4 note horns, they are loud too.
