Me and a mechanic friend checked out the steering rack, no leaks and the bushings seem okay. Taking it to an alignment shop in North Hills that specializes in 4x4's. Kinda leaning towards the other shop didn't tighten the cam bolts down. We straightened it out and I did a short trail and it didn't have a crooked steering wheel. This weekend heading out to KOFA so we'll see how it all goes after that trip?

@6wheelin did you figure out your problem? I'm always out of town working so I haven't put any time in on my possible rack bushing problem. I believe its the oem rack and the only time it moves is when I wheel it hard off road, so it might be the bushings getting worn out. Gonna have someone steer it back and forth to see if there is any play when I get home.

4RunnerAquasport, interesting you should ask.

Since my last post I did a trip to Baja hit a sharp concrete transition and knocked my steering wheel crooked. I was traveling at a decent speed but hit it square. Wheeled a bit yesterday and all my dash lights came on, traction control and check engine et al. I have checked my steering rack bushings and they're fine. I've talked with a few people and someone on this forum I recall mentioned it could be the pinion gear/worm gear? Maybe there's slop and it jumps a tooth? Or there's a worn tooth? It kinda makes sense considering the greater rolling mass I have with 34 inch tires.

Currently, I have a remanufactured rack sitting in my garage and I just bought the TC cam tab gussets because I noticed some of the OEM tabs are flattening out which may be a contributing factor.

The steering rack job is a messy pain in the rear so dropping the rig off tomorrow morning to have both done. I'm hitting Death Valley at the end of this month and was planning on reporting back my findings. Really hope these resolve this front end problem.

Hugh

Sorry for the huge laspe in time but I've been working 6 days a week and haven't had time for any wheeling till last weekend. So here's what I have found out.

I have replaced all steering and suspension componets (obviously upfront) UCA'S, LCA's, gusseted steering knuckles, steering rack with new inner & outer tie rods, TC cam tabs, Icon suspension and Method wheels wrapped with Toyo open country MT 34's with the exception of the actual steering shaft.

Still after wheeling the steering wheel is crooked. I spoke with a reputable alignment shop here in Van Nuy's and the owner who also wheels with a wrangler told me emphatically that he always needs an alignment after going in the dirt. So my conclusion is he's correct and alignments are a necessary expenditure. Or learn how to do it yourself.

On the bright side I love the Toyo's and the Counteract balancing beads no death wobble like those shitty Goodyear Wrangler MTR's. I'll never buy another set again.

Hugh

@6wheelin My alignment checked out fine after one of the biggest hits the front end took last year, (steering was out close to 90*) so that had me perplexed until I read about the rack bushings. My alignment tech (30 year veteran) agreed with the theory of the rack bushings being worn. If the steering wheel moved that much with the alignment numbers still identical, and other folks had the rack bushing problem, I decided to try a replacement. I think in my case the bushings were the culprit.
I replaced my rack with a CVJ reman and have not had a problem since, with a few wheeling trips on the new rack. Not sure about needing an alignment every time I wheel though.
