Another sunroof rattle noise

Hello everyone. My 4runner has been running great (2006 V8 Sport) but a few weeks ago while driving on the highway I heard what sounded like a bolt coming loose above me from the sunroof (I never use the sunroof so thought this was odd), and now get a rattle from the front edge of the passenger side of the sunroof...almost more toward the windshield corner.

Now I have searched the forums already for the common stuff and tried placing plastic tube over the side moving bar where people put the cut washer trick and lubed and cleaned the rails but sound is the same. The rattle only starts at highway speeds above about 65mph. I tried placing pressure on the sunroof glass in all corners and that doesn't help. Opening the sunroof either all the way or tilt and the sound is the same. Placing rags under the tilt arms was another common thing mentioned but doesn't help.

I took off the headliner but couldn't figure out where to unplug the electrical cord that runs down the passenger a pillar so if anyone has a diagram or photo of that part that would be great.

Once the headliner was down I checked the bolts on the L brackets connecting the sunroof to frame but they weren't loose. I tightened every bolt there I could find but nothing changed the noise. I also have played with the windblocker part that pops up but that doesn't change the noise.

I am sure if I take it to the dealer they will just recommend a new sunroof so maybe another forum member has had this similar problem and can chime in or I am welcome to other suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

If its coming from the passenger side headliner, it could very well be the vanity mirror. It vibrates if hitting against the roof. If you pull it down slightly, the vibration may stop and this could confirm this possible scenerio. There was a mention of the wires inside the mirror being loose overtime causing this issue that power the vanity light, but no guide on how to actually take it apart. Give it a go!

Wish I had advice, but I do have the same issue. Gonna get out this weekend and take a closer look now that its warm. I'll let you know if I have a breakthrough.

I’ve got a lot of different rattles from my passenger mirror, passenger a pillar, and sunroof. The cable swings down the A pillar, goes through a cable tie hook just underneath the dash, and then is secured to the body of the car via a clip by the kick panel. It’s terrible getting that thing loose. It then travels up and connects to the car via the driver panel fuse box. It’s one of the 2 large connectors on the right side.

Easiest was to break the claw behind the dash is to fish your arm from underneath.

If you still have your headliner out can you grab some pics. IU'd like to get an idea what it looks like so I can determine if my noise is related to the sunroof or the rack I just added. I've been working through rack noises and still have one noise that sounds like it's right over my head. I was not able to find any good pics of what the beast looks like w/o the headliner.

I've got the FSM for the 06 and can provide any details from that you would like in trade

On a previous SUV, had a rattle/knock king noise. Found the roof rack cross member lock down had vibrated loose. May want to give the roof rack lock nut a quick check.

Hope this may help someone: I finally fixed my maddening roof rattle the other day using cutting-edge materials and techniques. My observation that I could stop the rattle by gently pulling down on the headliner right at the passenger side front corner of the sunroof opening, combined with @gRunner3's 2010 post, led to folding over a piece of cardboard and wedging it above the headliner as shown. Rattle gone!
