Just did the CV reboot this week. What a $hit$how....ended up reversing the type of grease on my passenger side axle (put inner for outer and outer for inner). I hope it doesn't matter too much because I am just planning on running it like that for awhile. I also managed to break one of the cv band clamps and had to use a worm clamp that doesn't really fit that great.

After some consideration I think I am just going to buy some CVJ axles and be done with it.

Getting to the things was definitely the easy part. Rebooting them is such a pain in the a$$ though.

Also the drain plug on the front diff is definitely as much of a pain as people say it is.

I'm just going to pretend I didn't read this... (planning on doing this in the near future and have all the parts waiting for me to get the time) I'm considering doing it while leaving the piece connected to the front diff though, haven't looked too closely yet. Any tips? :/

So, for me, I knew I needed to redo the front diff oil. That's why I chose to pull them all the way out. Since we both have V8s we don't have to worry about the needle bearing that the v6 front diff has. If I had a v6 I would have left those inner pieces in.

All that being said, I wouldn't recommend the reboot. If you can return parts I would do that. Its too much work/time for me personally. I would rather just buy the CVJ axles and swap them in rather than have wasted all that time screwing around rebooting them.

My boot kit was like $55 per side....now I feel like I should have just put that money towards the CVJs

*sigh* I was torn on replacing too and just putting the money into new ones but I've always liked using oem stuff as much as possible. The other option was I have a NAPA just up the road but I haven't heard good things with them sealing to the diff. Figured it one of those I'll try it first and see how it goes, can always do it different next time. This is also me trying to pump myself up to get the courage to do the timing belt/water pump myself as well...

I agree on using OEM stuff, CVJ uses true toyota axles cores and rebuilds them better than stock. Harder bearings etc. They also use OEM axle boots too, or upgraded ones. Can't really go wrong with them

Got everything debadged. Very happy with the outcome. Don't know why I even hesitated. Front and rear toyota logos are getting plasti dipped and then some glossifier on top. Not sure what to do with the V8 emblem on the grille though? Any ideas? If I do it in black it will get lost in the black grille background. Red seems like it would be too tacky....I'm at a bit of an impasse

I might have left it if I had a different paint color on my runner, but the chrome on silver was not a good look for me personally. I thought the chrome looked tacky too especially because of that fact

I agree about chrome on silver but didn’t want to debadge. A few coats of PlastiDip Smoke took care of the chrome look. They’re gunmetal now.




And I respectfully disagree that a little red looks tacky on the grill. 😉 I get it’s not for everyone but I like how the emblem turned out.

Well I finally got the timing belt and water pump replaced this weekend!

On friday night I started at around 10:30 and worked until 2 am disassembling the engine, radiator, and various peripherals.

The next day me and my buddy started with the rest of the disassembly. We started about 9 and worked till 3.

We managed to get quite a few things replaced while we were in there too. All OEM parts: radiator, alternator, thermostat, fan clutch, water pump, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, serp belt tensioner, timing belt pulleys, and toyota coolant.

Lift going on next!!

After a long weekend of fighting the weather (I don't have a garage to work in) and rusty struts I finally have the front suspension on! I also ditched my front sway bar and am very glad I did. Drives a ton smoother with that ditched along with the 5100/885 combo and the new SPC ucas! My icon rear shocks get here wednesday and I can't wait to get the springs and shocks installed to get rid of the squat I currently have haha.

After the rear lift goes on I'll be going in for an alignment but currently it rides great.

Thinking about running either the Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 in a 285/70r17 or Cooper STT Pros in the same size.

Any thoughts on either of these tires?

Finally got the 4Runner fully lifted. 5100/885s in the front with SPCs, Icon 2" springs in the rear with the 2.0 shocks. Front sway bar deleted.

Overall very happy with the ride, but I am about 1.5-2" higher in the rear which I am not crazy about. Thinking about either adding a small spacer to the front suspension or maybe changing the rear springs out for slightly shorter ones.

I'm not crazy about either one of these options though. I feel like if I add more height in the front that I am liable to damage my cvs. As for the rear, I really like the fact that my springs and shocks are meant to work together (same brand), and I like the height that the rear is at as well and don't really want to drop it any.

I also scored a set of Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws in a 285/70r17 for $100!! They have a decent bit of tread left and absolutely no cracking in the rubber. I'm not planning on running these very long, but for the meantime they will look great and I will be able to fine tune my alignment and trim areas that need it before I end up with a brand new set of tires that are getting messed up from either of those things.

Also here is a shot of it while it was squatted LOL. I haven't taken a picture of its new form just yet.
