Cassette deck failure

My cassette deck just buzzes and does not do anything more. There's the rhythmic clicking of its normal operation, but after a bit it just buzzes and stops playing the cassette.
Anyone else had this issue?

Cassette deck is awesome but not repairable without shipping best bet is to buy a salvage unit for your year.

Cassette deck? R u sure you don't mean 8-track. lol

Buzzing probably implies your azimuth is off and needs adjusting, the clicking probably means the drive is all gunked up and/or the drive band has stretched and/or broken. Been a very very long time since I worked on cassette decks.

It may be fixable, but like the old 8 tracks of a time long gone there are much better ways of listening to music in your vehicle.

That might be what it's called. In mine it's labeled the Logic Control Deck. All I know is it used to play cassettes, and it doesn't anymore.
I can try and clean it out with compressed air and see what that does though!

Certainly try blowing it out. But those old style tape decks use grease and have components that just wear out like the belt drive to turn the supply reel. Not really a blow out fix.

You will need to disassemble and check the Supply reel and Take up reel to make sure the belt is driving the reel. You will also want to check the play idler for the right action. Pinch roller and head may need to be cleaned with mild rubbing alcohol. If the deck is super old it may not be worth fixing.

It is an older deck. (It's in an 03) If I see anything of note when I go to blow it out. I wouldn't doubt if an old belt on there has solidified over time into a certain shape. (Ive seen older CD player belts do that)
I do have to repair the head unit at some point anyways because it keeps resetting my radio stations, has a touchy volume, and fails to read CDs in the cold.

Get a Sony and join the 21st century

Sony XAV-AX6000 7-Inch Multimedia Receiver with Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Fits right in there - can hook up to factory system w/ a harness, and your 2003 becomes a 2023 from a multimedia standpoint.

GAIA Maps is now integrated in to both AA and Apple CarPlay, btw.

Yep, my 03 has the cassette deck plus the 5 CD changer all in one unit.

Sounds like the OP lost a belt. As mentioned, really not worth repairing for the cost of a used one. Example of one below if you really still want that cassette but make sure it's the correct one for your system.

Don't let anyone hassle you for being audio old school. Never underestimate the value of a good mixtape on a road trip! hehe

It probably just needs a good cleaning with mild isopropyl alcohol and some fresh lithium grease.

I assume it's a cassette deck that is belt driven (never looked & not sure) so you may likely need to replace it with one that is compatible if it's dry rotted.

I still have my old CD/Cassette combo head unit out of my 2005 4Runner and the cassette still worked when I pulled it out. It's just sitting on a shelf in my garage as I have no use for it other than possibly putting it back in on the off chance I decide to sell my 4Runner. *which I won't* PM me if you need a replacement. or here's one on eBay: 03 04 05 TOYOTA 4RUNNER RADIO DISPLAY RECEIVER AM-FM-CD OEM 86120-35281 | eBay

Cheers!
