ugh please dont make the mistake of running taco coils and shocks. At least do 5100's. The tacoma is a lighter weight vehicle by 500lbs with a soft suspension. it cant handle the 4runners weight. Im honestly baffled by people who enjoy it. the truck will dip two unches on a byump where it should only dip a half inch. I put it in my 4runner ind it felt like an old cadilac. And Im talking more "unkle buck" than the sopranos.

LOL...thanks for this input. I can see the benefit if there is a big savings in the cost of parts, but so far I have had no luck searching in my neck of the woods. I will probably concentrate on finding the best deal I can for 5100's, then try to figure out springs. Had I not procrastinated, wouldn't be pushed to get it done like I am now.

I will keep reading here, maybe call a knowledgeable vendor to find out how to get the stance/profile I'm looking for, i.e. essentially preserve the stock rake, with not too much added lift.

THe poly bushings help the ride a lot too. Theyre cheap and keep it stabilized much like xreas did when it was new.
If you cant afford new springs you can keep the originals and replace them down the line. Obviously much better to replace but its an option. For low priced takeoffs, oem fj springs are your best bet. THe moog fj 4x4 springs for the front are great and cheap (not to be confused with the 2x4 version). Can also get 5th gen springs for shipping cost on here, but dont expect much improvement.

I tried to stay cheap and ended up changing my suspension 3x before being content.I wish I had just got the 5100's in the first place. If you can diy it will save a ton of cash.

Thanks. I'll probably get springs somewhere, because they really aren't that expensive...decent used, all the better.

My understanding is that the rear Moog or FJ springs produce about 1 1/2" lift. So, to preserve the rake, give or take, the front setting should be at least the second level (.85).

I read here that the resulting lift from the .85 seat is roughly double that. I hope I have this correct. (an inquiry like this on one of those real long threads, which I have read, may not garner attention)

You’re mistaking your personal preferences for facts. Plus it seems to me that a manufacturer has to provide for a vehicle’s loaded weight, not just curb weight. And finally, I’ve had this “mistake” (TRD Offroad setup from a ‘15 Tacoma + FJ coils on the rear) on my 4R since December, with many miles on- and off-road, and the ride is nothing like you describe. It’s firm but not harsh, and interestingly, that they’re too harsh is often the complaint about 5100s.

I have no problem with your opinion, in fact it’s great that people get varied points of view. My problem is portraying a particular approach as some giant mistake just b/c the setup didn’t work for you.

Occasional dust up never hurts anything...
