How does electronic sway disco work? (Rubicon)
This week while traveling I rented a 2019 Jeep Rubicon with the full off road package, 285/70/17 KO2s, etc. While I was exploring the features, I saw the sway bar button, so I read about it in the manual, but looking underneath, I really couldn’t make sense of how it would actually work. It would be really neat if it could be adapted to the 4Runner though. I’ve had a blast driving it around on the beaches in St. Augustine, but I’m not super impressed with it on the highway at all! Very unstable feeling at higher speeds such as 75ish, where my 4Runner is rock solid, I had to pretty much white knuckle with both hands to keep it in a straight line. It was not beat or anything either. I was the very first person to rent it with only 350 miles on it. Definitely needed a LOT more caster or something. Other than that, a pretty impressive vehicle though, and being bright orange, definitely draws attention!

5th gen 4Runners have this feature as an option, KDSS. It might be adaptable to ours depending on how tied in it is with the ECU. That and some brackets would need to be fabricated.
I would save the hassle though, you can get quite a bit of travel even with stock sway bars. Or remove the sways entirely, get proper coilovers and a panhard relocation bracket.

Does anyone make a bolt-on panhard relocation bracket?

No. Just the weld-on as far as I know.

Thanks, I didn’t know the 5th gens had that. When I looked under, I saw the sways were connected with standard appearing heavy duty links with regular hardware. I’m going to have to study it some more, not really because I want, or need to disconnect mine, but rather just curiosity from an engineering standpoint. The manual was pretty specific about when it could be activated. From memory I believe it said you had to be in 4lo, and possibly have the diffs locked, or something like that. Of course there was the obligatory warning to not operate on the street until they were reconnected. Just playing in the sand, I haven’t had a need/opportunity to use anything other than 4hi. I did laugh my butt off though when I saw a woman somehow bury the rear end of another Rubicon on the beach a ways down from where I was. There was a couple of guys trying to dig her out and tell her what to do, but apparently no one mentioned shifting into 4wd, lol! I don’t believe these come in 2wd, do they? If they do it would be a complete waste of money inmo.

The sway bar disconnect is super simple. Imagine two gears that face each other, when the sway bar is connected, they mesh and both sides operate as one. When disconnected, they move apart to unmesh and operate independently. 4runners don't really need a rear swaybar, I completely removed mine and just put stiffer springs on it.

i had a 2" lift TJ on 33s in the past...your assessment of the Jeep seemed relatable. mine was horrid on the highway or really anything 4th or 5th gear on-road, moreso if cornering in too high of a gear (death wobble that was very sketchy on corners.) every frost heave on my way to surf newport for 40 mins i felt like the entire vehicle got airborn - plus aerodynamics/mpg didnt really outweigh the fun i was having offroad (which i admit was fun, but I had a sport with no lockers or anything, did climb impressive dune/hill trail once in it) My sister has a JK sahara 4dr white that id entertain when she sells down the road, possibly, but thats only because the longer wheelbase and i have an established short commute now. i like how the 4runner seems close to as capable offroad with the mods ive done, 18.5mpg with 2"lift, 33s, sliders, carrier, and it is also very comfortable on the roads.
only a 4 door or rubicon 4 dr jeep for me in future (or truck), if not a tacoma or another 4runner.
