Why do 4th gens get carpet stains from under console

In looking for a 4runner i have seen several that had brown/reddish carpet stains that appear to be from under the center console near the shifter. This stains the driver and passenger side front carpets. The back seat carpets of mine are also stained.

Is this from hitting rain puddles to fast or this an offroad thing?

Brown/reddish? I wouldn’t buy one of those without verifying that it’s not rusty seat or console mounting hardware. There are people who clean up flood-salvaged vehicles and sell them without disclosing the history.

I vote for drink spillage. I removed my console to replace an e-brake cable and there was drink goo and such under there too.

This is what I've always thought it was.
