On the subject of rare, did they ever make a 2WD V8?
Was it? Pretty sure gray cladding was part of the 2003 Sport Edition. They kept it for a whole model year before realizing it just wasn't working and went all painted for 2004. Pretty sure the aluminum wheels were at least optional.

@T4R2014 is correct. The gray cladding, with the little details over the wheel openings, was used on the 2003 SR5 & Sport Editions. The Limited used smooth painted plastic. My #1 & #3 Sport Editions, #2 SR5 ,and a V6 Sport parts truck I have all have the same gray unpainted plastic.
@tom4416 there are a lot of 2WD V8 models here in Oklahoma and Texas. The 4WD both in V6 and V8 are more rare based on the number that come up for sale.

Well, I have a 2003 SR5 with painted cladding and 17" aluminum wheels. Build date is 05/03 so it is very late in 2003 production. I bought it new and there were no options on it, base SR5 package. About half the 4Runners on the lot had the grey cladding, the rest had painted but don't know which trim level any of them were, only knew I did not want the grey cladding. I remember the salesman offering me a better deal on an SR5 with grey cladding and steel wheels (about $1,000 less IIRC) but wasn't interested.

One thing to remember when looking for a Trail Edition is that it was an Sr5 upgrade. I almost missed my TE because the dealer had it listed as an Sr5 and color as black (black wasn't offered, it was actually Shadow Mica). It was 1 owner, clean carfax, originally purchased at the dealer I bought it from. Had 178k miles and was a little rough with spots of surface rust, foggy and cracked headlights, and some hail dents, but mostly clean and everything worked. I paid $9600 in January 2020

There's a white TE about 45 minutes from me too. I read somewhere that less than 600 Trail Editions were produced
