Higher Clearance Rear Hitch Option

Yes I know I could go to a plate bumper or build a full custom setup but for some reason I like the stock plastic bumper covers and don't feel that they limit me for what I use my rig for. That being said, when wheeling, the most common thing I hit on is my V8 rear hitch hanging low. If I move it up out of the way I guess I could damage other things but I'd like to consider my options for slightly more clearance in the back. I've seen GX470 guys install the standard and high tuck hitches to their stock crossmembers so I'm assuming this would be the same thing on our 4runners? Anyone have any experience with this before I buy and start cutting up my bumper cover?

Looks nice actually! If you don’t tow anything I’m sure it would be fine for the occasional tug to remove a stuck Jeep. Nothing will be as strong as the load distribution hitch or a full plate bumper with a hitch built in though.

If you’re handy with fabrication tools I’m sure you could make it stronger by welding more bracing on the backside of the stock crossmember which would distribute loads a lot better, should you decide you still want to tow with it.

I flipped the hitch on my 3rd gen. It was actually really straighforward, but I haven't really looked too closely at how the V8 hitch is mounted. We cut out the cross section, flipped it over, and welded it back on to the frame mounts.

4x4 Labs rear bumper provides high clearance and has a hidden hitch built in.

Bought a full size spare wheel and tire today. Looking for a used Wilco or similar swing out tire carrier, rigd makes one now as well it looks like, and will remove my V8 hitch and install either a stock V6 or a metaltech normal or high tuck hitch to hold it. This should leave me about the same departure angle or better with less hitch hanging down and enable me to carry the full size spare, and hopefully be less than $1k into this whole thing if I find the right used deal.

For 1200 or so you could have a complete bumper.

Looks to be about $1400 + shipping the way I'd get it configured. It's just so.... ugly lol way cheaper than the competition though for sure. I think I'm stock bumper guy.
