Wouldn't having a 90 degree elbow from the exhaust pipe to the turbo mounting flange, or just have the exhaust pipe merge directly to the mounting flange, direct the exhaust flow better to the turbo for quicker spool than having the flange perpendicular to the exhaust pipe? I tried example pics to Imgur but it's broken at the moment
I'm sure your welder friend will have some suggestions though

Thanks! Once I get the turbo mounted it will be on to charge pipes which won’t be very hard. The only semi difficult part is that I’ll be building a carbon fiber intake to adapt from the charge pipe to the stock intake

Originally that was my plan but just due to space restrictions I wasn’t going to be able to fit it like that without it sticking down below the frame. I’m not too concerned about this design as it seems like the third gen turbo guys were running it without issues. It’s not ideal but without another option it will have to do haha. Once I get this mounted I’ll be able to move onto charge pipes and building a carbon fiber intake

Here's the 90-degree setup on Clownmeant's 3rd-gen Clownmeat's build thread
Oooh carbon fiber intake

Just dropped off the 4runner today for all the exhaust work! The guy does really good work from what I’ve seen and he’s going to do it in stainless steel as well. He also said he would make the turbo section removable for ease of access which I’m happy about. Hoping to hear back from him tonight on the measurements of everything.

It is similar to that design. I originally planned to not have a 90 but he said things would flow more efficiently this way. And yeah I am keeping my flowmaster on it. I didnt want it to be too obnoxiously loud haha

If I'm looking at this correctly (bear with me,I haven't slept yet becausenightshift), the turbo is post-muffler? The exhaust is going to be even quieter than it was naturally aspirated, even when the WG dumps open. I'm not saying it's bad thing, it'll be quite a sleeper...or should I say a quiet sleeper LOL

Yes, it sure looks that way to me as well. John, is it mounted by the rear axle? If so, I’ve never seen a setup like that before. If it is how it t appears, what is the advantage/reason behind not doing the typical engine bay mounting? Forgive my density if this is a dumb question, as I’m not experienced at all in turbo systems. Every one that ve ever seen has been literally attached to the exhaust manifold, or very close to that point.

It is post muffler haha but because its a flowmaster I think it should still have some noise to it but I definitely wanted it sleeperish. I'm suppose to pick it up this evening

The main reasoning behind this setup was that this is where is seemed that most third gen guys mounted theirs as well as one 4th gen v8 guy that I talked to. The other reasoning was down time and budget. Since this is my daily driver with doing this setup I've been able to add almost everything with nearly zero down time other than for this exhaust work. On top of this I wanted to if I needed be able to return things to stock relatively easily

Makes perfect sense, just never seen it mounted like that before. As I said though, I’m not super knowledgeable with turbo systems. My only forced induction experience is with my twin screw supercharged ‘03 Terminator (also my screen name). I’m definitely interested in seeing how this works out because I’d love to eventually add some type of forced induction to my v8 runner. Only problem with the style you are running is that it would mess up my brand new TRD duals.
