@Johns06yota

Looking into building a rear-mount turbo for my single cab Tundra 4.7L. Tons of room underneath since it doesn't have a t-case. Do you know the pros/cons to having the turbo mounted far back near the axle like yours, or would it be better since I think I have the room to mount it near the transmission? Shorter charge piping and exhaust should reduce lag in the system right? Would give me decent room for mufflers behind it. Little more protected up there. Thoughts? Looking at 3-5 lbs of boost max, but just want to do it right.

Superchargers are around $4k used if you can even find one, let alone belts for them. I'm not sure they'll fit the VVTI motors either.

Plus no turbo noises.

I'd but the turbo in the engine bay, there's room. You might need to move the A/C lines out of the way but it should be doable. I'm sure you've seen this kit on ebay....

I've seen the kit, and for an offroader that would be the way to go. But if I do forced induction I will keep it a street truck only anyway.

With a rear mount you don't have to mess with installing headers or moving anything around in the engine bay, or even using an intercooler. I can fabricate everything myself with my tig welder. It would be an insanely simple system and good enough performance for my uses. I mainly just want to hear a turbo whistle.

So if this is yours tell us a little bit about it: performance, fuel economy, etc.
When did you do it, mileage, a few install details.
Thanks!

No idea, it could be the 4Runner, Tundra, or Sequoia.

Not mine, read my post about it being the eBay kit.

sorry for the late reply. your best option is going to be placing it in the engine bay. the v6 just does not flow enough to spool for boost in a timely manor that far back. The amount of money I spent to get it to spool with a little lag would have paid for someone to make custom manifolds. My other concern with rear mount was an oil line blowing or the scavenge pump failing. basically what im getting at is rear mount seems easier on paper but adds a lot of difficulty that you dont initially see. by doing engine bay mount you will get boost quick enough for slow speeds and also keep the reliability factor higher

That is my conclusion as well, though for what I want it for a rear mount could still work. I don't need a ton of power. I'll just need to research some more. I found this thread for a V6 Tacoma where they did a single turbo in the engine bay. If its possible to build a kit this way without pulling the engine that might be my best bet. Also as mentioned there is already a kit out there that should work for my application.

I'm sad to see that the OP went to so much trouble to fabricate and build this kit only to have to throw in the towel. The community would so benefit from more research done into turbocharging the 4.0L V6, and it was fun to see the work being done to accomplish that.

Did anyone buy the used kit? Are developments ongoing?

Again, sorry to see it come to an end...very cool stuff. I wish there were some published dyno or Dragy numbers made just to quantify the differences too.
