Brakes touchy/grabby after hard braking

Hi All,

I have a 2005 SR5 that I bought new from the dealer. I've noticed this problem from time to time and have done some searching here but haven't seen anyone mention the same issue. It's been there since new, and I've since replaced rotors, calipers, etc. over the years but the truck still exhibits the same issue.

Problem: When I hit the brakes hard suddenly, but then release my foot from the brake, I can't touch the brake pedal without the brakes almost locking up. I have to lightly tap the pedal to come to a complete stop. When I take off again, it seems to be fixed.

The last time this happened, I hit the brakes a bit harder than usual but I was also on some very rough pavement (even rougher than normal NJ pavement - haha) and the brakes immediately grabbed as described above.

Anyone have this issue and if so, what was the resolution?

I have similar symptoms. I’ve assumed it’s the ABS system doing its thing.

Curious to hear people’s thoughts

15+ year old abs technology. Mine sometimes cycles over rough pavement and a second or 2 past whatever bump I hit.

Mine did the same thing over the Winter, hard panic brake when a knucklehead pulled in front of me followed by over-sensitive brakes...followed by vibration as the front passenger rotor overheated and warped.

Diagnosis: rubber brake hose collapsed internally, creating a 1-way valve which held the caliper pistons extended. When I found this I replaced both sides. The rotor was discolored black, piston boots on the caliper were cooked.

Yeah, I think that's really what it comes down to. Just wanted to verify here though. Braking on rough pavement will trigger it every time.

New shocks/tires and suspension bits might help a little bit but it is likely the truck itself.
