Tensioner pulley

Hi there -

No real point to this post except to say that I changed my tensioner pulley yesterday. It was absolutely horrible. This is on the v8 by the way. Dear god.

Tight quarters...crazy angles...busted knuckles.

That being said, I’m really happy I did it. No more squeal. And, it is doable with patience!

For me, I unbolted the Alternator, steering pump, timing belt cover, and the tensioner pulley. Also, I removed my skid plate, my right front wheel and the fender liner. I also had to disconnect my air box, the main coolant line (bucket below), and the coolant reservoir.

Best of luck to those doing this!

Wow, I replaced my tensioner pulley on my V8 about 2 months ago...but I never removed anything but the pulley, not understanding why you had to remove all of what you did to do your's, sure it's tight in there and yes busted knuckles galore, well at least one or two, but I had mine done within 30 minutes, the hardest part for me was keeping the new serpentine belt on all the rest of the pulleys until I could slip it over the tensioner pulley and release the pressure on the tensioner.

Did you replace the entire tensioner or just the pulley?

I did the whole tensioner... maybe I should not have... sounds like the pulley itself would have been about 5hrs less...

Yes I can see where it would take longer to do the entire tensioner, the tension on mine was great so I saw no need to replace it, only the bad pulley/bearing.

Sounds like the best time to do that replacement would be when doing the timing belt since all that stuff has to come off anyway. I was planning to do just the pulley when I do the others and the belt, but maybe I’ll do the whole assembly at one time when I do the TB this season. The pulleys are occasionally noisy when it gets really cold during warmup, but then it goes away so I was planning to at least get new bearings for them at minimum. I have a press, so if the pulleys themselves aren’t grooved or worn, I’ll just do the bearings.

If you are thinking about it, def do it during the TB replacement. I didnt realize it while I did my TB until i got to the point of putting my old tensioner and pulley back on.
