It looks like the bearing assembly gets pressed into the backing plate so it wouldn't be an easy swap.

The Scion caliper is no-go. Simply way too small to accommodate the 4Runner between the rear mounts and rotor size.

My original idea of mounting a bracket to these studs in red should work. We can probably do all 4 studs though with a CNC'd bracket that looks like the one below. The only problem is the studs need replaced with longer ones, and to replace the studs the backing plates/hubs need pressed off the shaft. Good thing I have a complete axle assembly sitting in my garage to pull parts and measure from. I just ordered the Wilwood mechanical caliper.

The test should actually be how the “parking brake” would actually be employed, such as parking on a downgrade. I had the same issue with my v8 Explorer, even with new parts it couldn’t hold under throttle, but would actually work as intended for incline parking.

fellow M******* - and im glad my dad always told me to make sure the ebrake works when buying a used vehicle. not for using them, but for passing inspection/not having a surprise repair.

Questions:
Is anybody interested in a group buy for these dual caliper brackets, to install you would need to have the backing plate pressed off the axle shafts to install a set of longer studs that I would supply. Also you would need to cut the factory dust/rock shield around the caliper.
Wilwood mechanical calipers ($200)
Extended studs ($20)
Have a shop press out the backing plates ($40)
Modified parking brake cables or new Wilwood cables ($0 or $100?)
My CNC'd brackets ($?)
So maybe $450 to rip out the OE parking brake system for good?

Just wondering if you looked into a line lock kit?

I like the simplicity and redundancy of a separate mechanical system that can replace the drums.

Part # 120-12069-BK. MC4 Mechanical caliper. There are a couple different part numbers they sell, I think the difference being rotor width.
Haven't made a bracket yet. I think it will need a large step in it so a welded bracket might be the cheapest vs billet. This is the latest drawing I had on my PC.

Any update on this? I would for sure be interested in a group buy to eliminate the factory junk. I hate having a shitty e-brake, just bugs me.
Seeing that you have modeling software I'm assuming you have machining capabilities as well? If not I work at a machine shop and could get that bracket made up very easily. Plenty of "government" work going on in the shop, especially right now lmao.

Actually, this is the latest drawing on my PC. I think I decided not to machine it from a 1.5" thick piece of steel and instead do a weldment with standoffs. At least for prototyping, it'll be cheaper.

At my old job the engineers (me) could use the two bridgeports with digital readouts whenever they wanted, even for personal projects. My new job it would need to be CNC'd, and I doubt they would touch it. But my brother and I have had stuff made at another fab shop before.
What would be handy would be a 3d printer...
