Going to look at an 07, need help please!!

Hi guys. I'm usually on the 5th Gen side but wanting to pick up a daily driver to keep the miles down on my Pro.

Going to check out an 07 4runner Sport edition. It does have the V8, 2wd and appears to be loaded with leather, jbl, and sunroof but has 235K miles. They are asking $5K. Anything in particular I should look for and do you think the price is right if it's in decent shape.

Thanks for any help.

2wd .. meh.
V8 so manifold ticking.
Headlights need a good cleaning.
Check for seized calipers.
Park somewhere dark, turn on the lights. Check all the bulbs in the dash and center stack.

Southern truck so hopefully no/minimal rust?

If you haven't yet, register the VIN on Toyota owners club. Check for the normal maintenance. TB/WB/Plugs every 90ish k.

Check for Rust and Leaks of course,

V8, When was the Timing Belt last done? Check all Operation of things!

2wd so no 4wd/Transfer Case/Front Diff to worry about

Thanks for the tips. If it's in overall good condition is $5K a pretty good price? Is 235k enough to say Stay Away. Of course I'm going to offer less. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about the mileage if it appears to have been serviced regularly and you don't see any bad leaks, and of course no undue noises when test driving it.

There are 2 Toyota Tundras that reached 1,000,000 miles with the same V8 engine!

I think $5000 maybe be a good price depending on condition, just an FYI, the KBB value for your zip code/area shows that the trade in value if in excellent condition is between $5039 to $6756 with an average trade in value of $5898, private sale value is in between $6884 to $9047 with an average private sale value of $7966, didn't show a dealer sale price but it's usually a $1000 or more higher than a private sale...but as mentioned this is in excellent condition, the seat having what appear to be a small tear or wear brings that down a little bit, but for that condition it should have excellent paint/body, new tires, no rust to speak of fairly newly replaced timing belt, brakes, etc., etc.

2 steps down to good condition would knock the average prices down by $1300 (trade in) to $1500 (private sale) less.

KBB explains the difference from good or excellent as...

Excellent
3%
of cars we value
Looks new and is in excellent mechanical condition

So this means it should need NOTHING!!

Good
54%
of cars we value
Has some repairable cosmetic defects and is free of major mechanical problems

Note that for good condition it says "major mechanical problems" so that doesn't means it doesn't need some minor mechanical repairs, i.e. new brake pads, new serpentine belt, sparks plugs, air filter and cabin filter, oil change, i.e. basically needing most servicing done but hasn't been neglected on servicing and tires should have at least half of the original thread and I would say the timing belt should have at least 40,000 or more miles left on it before needing replacing, so that means it should of had been replaced within the last 50,000 miles.

Thanks for the reply. Yep the 4.7 I know is rock solid. Doesn't appear to have much Toyota service history, other the having the air injection pump and valves replaced at 150K. Nothing on the timing belt so unless there is a service sticker or receipt I'd have to change it after purchase. I'm going to look it over well and if all looks okay then I'm going to offer $4K.

I do most of my own wrenching, can get Toyota parts at dealer pricing, and have a buddy that's a Toyota Master Tech so I think I'll be pretty safe at that price. More worried about Trans then anything.

It's sounds like you know what to look at and should be a good deal if you like what you see.

I do all of my own work as well, also family and friends, I do however have a transmission guy I have do any trans work I need done, he and I talked about these transmissions and he says they're about as bulletproof as you can get for any transmissions he has worked on and very seldom has to do any rebuilds on them, usually it's the electrical connector corroding if from up north or sometime a shift solenoid needs replacing.

There's also the torque converter shudder, but seem to be fine once you replace some if not all of the so called WS "lifetime fluid", it's good fluid but no fluid is good for lifetime!

Let us know what happens!
