painting plastic body parts

Hey
The plastic body parts could use a face lift.
What have you used to paint yours?
I am looking for some thing that wont peel off right away.
I have not had much luck in the past with painting plastic or abs which ever they make the bumpers stuff out of.
Thanks

Some manufacturers make paint for the specific application... Dupli-color is one that has paints designed for bumper covers and plastic trim, but I'm sure that others are available. As with any paint job, preparation is key. Follow the paint manufacturer's recommendations, but you generally want to evenly scuff the surface for improved bond, clean the surface so it's free of all dust and oils, prime, and paint. Something else to remember is to take your time... multiple smooth, even, LIGHT coats will typically produce the best results. Hope that helps some.

I'm a big fan of Krylon Fusion plastic spray paint, but I've only used it on interior parts.

It depends on how good you want the finish. Do you want to sand out scratches prime then paint or just paint over the existing paint and scratches?

If you want to do a good job sand out the scratches with 320/400 grit sand paper then prime (two coats). Sand the primer with 500 grit (get the orange peal out) then paint. As for paint your can get your paint code off the drivers door (ex 1E7, 4Q2, 1F7, 202) Toyota colours. Go to a local paint shop and ask for single stage paint (the clear is mixed in with the colour) very easy to spray. Do two coats.

If you don't want to prime and just paint over the old paint all you have to do is scuff the paint with red scotch brite pad (automotive store should have it) then paint ( two coats). Make sure to sand your edges well so there is no peeling issues

Good luck

I painted a car a while ago and for the plastic they have a "flex" agent or an additive, so when the plastic moves the paint moved too. Make sure to look for that. I don't remember what my buddy used a few years ago.

For already coated parts I would sand with a 600 grit sandpaper and then apply a flexible primer.

If the paint is removed to substrate then it is imperative you use an adhesion promoter for plastics.

The folks at automotivetouchup dot com have some decent products for DIY use.

First lightly sand the plastic with 400 grit (take off the shine), DupliColor has an Adhesion Promoter used on plastic, then DupliColor Filler Primer, DupliColor Perfect Match (look for your color code) and finally DupliColor Clear Coat.

I painted my side mirrors and I must say it looks good and it passed the Wife Test!

Good luck.

Has anyone actually painted the 2003 cladding

Hi,

I'm reviving this thread in the hopes that someone has actually done this (as opposed to offering general tips on how to paint plastic) and can offer some advice on which product to use, color matching, process followed, etc. I bought a used 2003 and I can live with the condition of the cladding, but unfortunately the previous owner replaced the driver side rear corner of the bumper with an unpainted replacement part. Rather than having to buy a new part, I was hoping I could paint it and was looking for tips.

Thanks in advance!
