Re-doing a wheel bearing: should have replaced the outboard seal.
I had replaced both CV axles and wheel bearings in 2017. The passenger side outboard factory seal (pressed into the back of the spindle) looked fine when I installed the salvage yard CV axle and a Marion bearing assembly at the time, so I left it in. Driver side ouboard seal was shot, so I installed a new Timken seal. The CV axles were LKQ pieces from a 2011 FJ Cruiser with ~22K miles and looked like new, so I didn't replace the boots.
Fast forward to 2019: The passenger side junkyard CV axle inboard boot split and I noticed a buzzing vibration in the steering wheel during long right turns at highway speeds...when I disassembled it this weekend, I found part of the seal spring sticking out of the spindle and water inside the noisy wheel bearing. The project turned into a hub & bearing in addition to re-booting the CV axle. It's all back together as of 3am Sunday, and the buzzing is gone. Painful lesson: always replace the outboard seal if it's old.
