2006 4.7 transmission "flares" when going into O/D

Looking for a little direction...

My 06 Limited with the 4.7 has 255k. Had transmission flushed with the Toyota WS at about 230k (when I bought it). I don't know if it had been done before. The shop said they had seen worse but the fluid was dark.

It's been performing flawlessly until now. When I get on the interstate and up to speed to where it shifts into overdrive, the transmission flares before going into gear. What I mean is if I'm under 3k rpm and it is about to shift the tach needle goes up to about 4k and then shifts into overdrive. It also seems to flare a bit if I'm in town going slower but it's not as noticeable as it only flares a couple of hundred rpm's. And it doesn't seem to do it every time in town.

It also has the slipyoke binding issue that I am going to take care of but I don't think it's related.

Any ideas if there is an additive I can put in the transmission to try and alleviate this? Or should I just try a flush myself using Valvoline Maxlife instead of the Toyota WS? I have a hard time believing it's the fluid as it onl has about 25k on it.

Thanks!

You might try adding the additive "Shudder Fixx", not sure if it will help with the issue you're having or not, it formulated to stop torque converter shudder and most here add it when they do the fluid exchange.

You can find it at most auto parts stores, on some of the tubes it may say Dr Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx, or it may just say Lubegard Instant Shudder Fixx, but either is the same product made by the same company.

thank you. I thought about trying the Shudder Fixx. I called the transmission shop that flushed it last year. They are going to drive it, let it set overnight and then check levels and proceed from there. He thinks it's a possible solenoid issue. If they end up draining it to do the solenoid, I am going to have them refill with the Maxlife. I've read nothing but good things about it.

I appreciate the response.

Be sure to update us on the outcome!

Even if they drain it and refill with Maxlife or not I would still recommend adding the Shudder Fixx, it definitely won't hurt anything and could well improve torque converter lockout and therefore shift points, etc., it's some good stuff!!

Well the transmission shop drove it, let it sit overnight and then checked the fluid. They said the fluid looked great and he had a hard time getting it to flare into OD and when it did it was minor. Checked for codes and there are none. Also said there is only one shift solenoid for all gears and the other shift points are not flaring. At all. In fact he said that this transmission was very solid on shift points and he was impressed, especially for the mileage (255k).

He thinks that IF there is a problem it is normal wear and not anything to worry about. Told me to drive it and enjoy. Oddly enough, it has not flared once since I picked it up. LOL, go figure.

Good to hear they gave it a passing grade and you haven't had the issue return!

If it were mine I would still add the Shudder Fixx, won't hurt anything that's for sure!

I had the SAME rpm flare you are describing. My 2003 v8 has about 110k miles on it at the time. I dropped it off at a recommended trans shop. They claimed the fluid was full of debris and rebuilt it.

After the rebuild the flare persisted. They rebuilt it two more times, once with a different case. Same result. They also paid to have it looked at by the Toyota dealer. The Toyota tech said he didn’t know why it does it but blamed the rebuild.

In the process we updated the trans software, tried a shift kit, and tried shudder fix. All resulted in no change.

So over a year later, it still has the flare. Lesson learned, I shouldn’t have took it anywhere and I should just drive it until the trans fails and then replace it with a used one.

Personally, I suspect the harness in the trans or engine has an issue, but fixing that would not be worth the cost. It would be cheaper to get a used trans installed in a few years.
