Still having Transfer Case issues

I have tried to get the proper transfer case from a used parts company called LKQ. I have yet to my knowledge received the right one. I have a 2004 4runner SR5 V-8 which is all wheel drive. They have sent me two transfer cases out of two different V-6 donor vehicles. Neither Transfer case will lock into the AWD position the V-8 is standard with. They will switch from High to Low range but the front drive line never will engage. I have checked my front differential and it is in good working order. But the front output shaft of the transfer case will not engage to give me AWD.

I have looked at the Toyota part numbers and there are two different part numbers. The V-8 AWD shows a part# 36100-6D401 The V-6 part number shows a part# 36100-3D510. Does any one know how to tell the difference from the outside of the transfer case which one is which? Also, is there any where I can purchase a rebuild manual and just rebuild my original transfer case that broke? Any help is appreciated.

So nobody had tried to rebuild their transfer case? I assume that there is also no way to tell the part number of the actual transfer case other than what donor vehicle it came from.

Apparently not, on both counts. The V8 t-case has a center differential that allows AWD, it's internal so not obvious from outside. What happened with your t-case? Why are you needing to rebuild/replace?
