Phone Mount--Left Side

Not happy with phone mount options to the right side of drivers seat and have been looking for an option that would get the phone higher and left of the steering wheel--in line with the A pillar to minimize any visual impairment.

My first attempt was a magnet mount on the left vent which worked but lacked the ability to tilt. Unfortunately, the glare from the driver side window almost completely rendered my phone useless. I was in the hunt for some kind of tilt-able attachable platform for the left side.

I purchase a 1" ball for a Ram Mount that attached to the lower 8mm bolt on the handle off the A pillar and a double Ram Socket along with a 2x1.7 Ram phone mount plus a ProClip Adjustable phone holder. To my dismay I could not get the double socket long length attachment to attach to the ball and provide me the correct angles for the ProClip. Then I realized I didn't need the Ram ball attached to the pillar handle but I could attach the double sock to the handle itself providing an absolute perfect angle to the phone. Below see how this attachment looks.

I have a GTA phone kit for my phone for blue tooth functions and hands free operation but realize that one of the big advantages of having the phone so close to the driver is that the phone speaker function is all that is needed for hands free phone calls. But if I want to listen to my music stored on the phone I can turn on the blue tooth function.

One of the perceived disadvantages of having the phone mounted away from the dash is having to deal with the charge cord. But because this mount is so close to the driver's side door and the weatherstripping it makes for a very convenient channel to run the charge cord. I simply added a usb charger to the dash on the left side and the cord is really not in the way or very noticeable.

In my opinion this mount option is worth the added cost. So the Adjustable ProClip mount for my iPhone 6 was $40, the Double Socket Long Length Ram was $17 and the Ram 2x1.7 Phone Mount was $8. I am justifying the cost of this setup by telling myself I will be using the same double ended Ram for a small table in the back when camping (utilizing the extra Ram ball that didn't work out for the phone mount).

Everyone likes to have there phones in a different place and this might give others an additional option (although a bit spendy).

I have had a similar setup for a while now, but I used a usb switch panel to connect to my radio for apple carplay

Left Side Mount

Just the light playing tricks-it’s all grey.

I need to add that my Long Ram Mount is not working out as I thought it was. Instead of deleting this thread I think I need to update my remarks about the value since there are some that did a better job of attaching it left side. And this ends up being what not to do.

Due to the length of the Ram the phone bounces and jiggles. It also does not grip well unless you really twist harder than you should have to. And mounting directly to the pillar handle almost ruined it. Sorry for posting this without testing it first. I went back to a vent mount with the ProClip (which tilts) and I think I’m good.

I went a similar route, been happy with it.

Saw somewhere someone put a ball mount on one of the grab handle screws, I couldn't get the phone far enough away from the steering wheel and at a good angle with that setup. Used some flat stock I had laying around to get the ball mount closer to the windshield and used one of the short arms, thing doesn't move at all and is at the perfect spot (for me)

Nevermind the messy garage...

Thanks for the reply. Ya, I think the length of the Ram mount and not attaching to a ball with a solid hold was my problem. I like the height of your setup better but not going to throw money at a shorter double socket Ram right now.

I'm finalizing a design for the 3rd Gen a-pillar phone mount. Would you guys be interested in something like this for the 4th Gen (replace the ultragauge in the picture with a phone)?:

Yes, that looks pretty slick. I assume it’s a metal base that a phone holder like a ProClip would mount to? Looks like it mounts below the bottom screw on the handle. Tell us more.

Exactly - the mount would provide a flat interface that's already pointed at your face, so you would not need the adjustable mounting balls and arms of the RAM system.

The interface will have the AMPS bolt pattern incorporated. You'd be able use whatever mounting system you like - adhesive, RAM, Pro-Clip, or off-brand AMPS mounts.

I'm in. Let me know when you might have them available and my cost. Thanks

This is really nice.

I don't have a scan gauge currently, but this could be a great mounting option that isn't on top of the steering column.

I'm in for one. Using a pro-clip over the right-hand side drivers vent + a Scosche magic mount... I would rather have something on the right-hand side but will give this a shot so I can get my vent back.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm wrapping up the ultragauge and scangauge designs, and then will move on to working up something for the phone mounts.

Where or how did you make that?
