fyi i've got an iphone 8

That’s the unit I have and I only made a couple test calls and my wife had no issues with it. She said similar quality to the built in calls from carplay in my Civic that has all that stock.

I installed the Sony XAV-AX5000 last night. The install was pretty smooth and it looks great. I expected a little more from the Metra dash kit, but it looks alright.

Install: The install was pretty straightforward and took me about 1 1/2 hours to complete. The longest part was getting the Toyota mounting brackets and the Metra Dash kit to lineup just right. I had to grind off some small nipples off the Toyota mount. There's still a tiny gap on Metra dash kit. The Crutchfield ReadyHarness wiring was worth every penny. Especially since I was doing the install during 100 plus degree AZ weather.
The radio: the Alpine unit is pretty basic. You can't change the colors, wallpaper, etc, but the sound quality is good and the Carplay is what I really wanted. Note on the Carplay (not just Alpine, but most all wired systems). Make sure you have a good USB cable or the receiver will not recognize the device. I was pretty upset at first, but I realized I was using my old iPhone 6 cable for my iPhone XR. I grabbed my newer cable and it works fine now. Also, make your cables and phone ports are clean.
Next steps: I plan on doing the following when it cools down a bit. Install a backup camera and rewire the Fosgate amp and Subwoofer directly into the Alpine and bypass the JBL amp. I may also replace the JBL factory amp and speakers.

Crux Wiring Interface (Fade function will be lost) - https://www.crutchfield.com/p_249CST...Interface.html

I'm about to pull the trigger on the Alpine. I was going to add the power pack, the KTA-450 but according to Crutchfield all of the wiring has be be re-run to the speakers. I have zero plans to swap out the speakers. All I am wanting is Apple CarPlay, BT and a rearview camera to make it easier for the obvious and lining up the hitch. My question is, how is the factory JBL audio with just swapping the Alpine head unit?

If you are planning on doing a clean look (using a USB adapter) don't do the Alpine. I exchanged the Alpine for a Sony XAV-AX5000, like mja8105.
The Alpine does not have a strong enough USB cord; therefore, it keeps losing connection with the smartphone or the screen would look distorted. Also, the mounts fit funky and you have to cut some of the OE 4Runner brackets.
Since installing the Sony, it connects all the time and Carplay works like a charm. The factory JBL sounds great.

Sony XAV-AX1000
I installed the Sony to i my 07 about a month or so ago, its a solid unit I got the metra kit and steering controls PAC also. I also paid for the pre made custom adapter from Crutchfield but I had a lot of problems with their wiring.
There were at least 3 bad connections which I necessitated taking the dash apart at least 5 times to find and fix. They gave me the money back but it was still a pain. The best part about the custom adapter is it has the factory connectors the way it was wired was meh.
Their tech support is legit if you need help, based in the USA and guys like us that like to mess with cars and stuff. They helped me diagnose the issues with their harness.
Stereo itself is great, loud and good sound through factory speakers and carplay is awesome.

Sony XAV-1000
Just installed a Sony XAV-AX1000 from Crutchfield. Easy install, good fit and Car Play works very well. Nice sound and current looks.

Pioneer MVH-2400NEX
I installed the Pioneer MVH-2400NEW with Apple Car Play and bluetooth. Used the Crutchfield wiring harness and steering wheel control interface. Also added a backup camera in the process. Everything works great except for occasionally I have to turn off and then back on the 4Runner '05 for the steering wheel controls to function.

Sony XAV-AX1000
Oh Yes I forgot I installed a backup camera too to this unit when I put it in.
Figuring out how to wire it was a real pain, if you do it power the camera directly from a tapa fuse or acc source and then use the trigger wire (purple / white) from the reverse light. Don't use the camera power wire from the harness it does not work. This is the correct way to get the camera to switch when you select reverse, there are lots of confusing articles out there but this is what I do and it works fine.

I have an 07 SR5 - NO steering wheel controls and just the basic in dash factory CD stereo NOT the JBL system.
I'm investigating installation of a Pioneer deck I already have or possibly getting a double din with backup camera.
several questions:
1 - I found one wiring harness that made it abundantly clear I would loose alert beeps provided by the 4Runner... are alert tones run through the sound system? The wiring harness my Crutchfield contact pointed me to appears to be a typical harness but he also included an audio Y adapter going from stereo female RCA connectors to an 1/8" male mini plug, is this to deal with alert tones? One scenario I can think of is the 4Runner has it's own amplifier so the Y adapter is to take the preamp outputs from the Pioneer as a feed to the amplifier.
2 - some folks mention a parking break bypass, is this a Toyota thing or an Alpine thing? What does the parking break have to do with the stereo?

Hello all...i read somewhere here in the forum a while ago that a stock stereo is a direct fit from 2014 scion FRZ or whatever(small sports car)to 4runner with no harness needed.

1 - Not sure but in my experience I haven’t heard of alert beeps having anything to do with the sound system.
2 - This is considered a safety feature. The wiring is set up such that video playback in DVD-equipped decks and often some of the more-involved unit settings will not work unless the parking brake is applied (thus ensuring the vehicle is stopped).
FWIW to anyone going the CarPlay route, I recently installed a Pioneer AVH-2550NEX and it’s a great setup. Also, the stereo thread linked in my sig has useful installation info including the parking brake & backup cam wiring.

Finally got pics...as mentioned above, I recently replaced my Kenwood with the excellent Pioneer AVH-2550NEX & couldn’t be happier with it. I placed a magnetic phone mount as shown using one of those removable 3M strips, a solution I would have loved to have figured out much sooner.
