Strange noise

All,
A couple of years ago, I had taken my '06 4Runner to the dealership, and among other things having done, they replaced the brakes. Ever since that time, every time I hit a bump, pot hole, etc, there is a metal clanging sound coming from the front end. Of course, each time I take it somewhere (ie; have tires put on, oil changed, etc) I ask them to see if they can find out where that noise is coming from, and each time they say that they do not see anything, and do not hear a noise. Fortunately, the 4Runner is still driving, no issues, and the noise has not gotten worse.
Has anyone else experienced this? Anyone know what this could be?
I read somewhere that with the older 4Runners, when the brakes are replaced, sometimes the calipers are not seated properly and they can make the clanging noise.

Brake pads?

I had this issue for years!

Thought it was suspension related, but replaced that and still had it. Checked my calipers and they were torqued to spec. Checked the slash guard underneath and that was set tight.

In the end it was my brake pad. About 3 years ago I replaced my calipers and pads all around. On the front left I install 2 of the little springs to hold the brake pad, and for some reason only 1 on the right side. I think they are only suppose to need one, but it turns out that with out a second one the pads can slide up and down in the caliper just enough to make a "clank" sound when going over bumps.

I tested this out by hitting the same bumps with my foot on and off the brake. I only heard the clank when my foot was off the brakes. Then a few weekends ago, when working on the Runner, I had the wheels off and was able to grab a pad with my fingers, while still in place, and slide it up and down. Sure enough it produce the same clank sound.

I just installed both of these on the front right pads. The guy at Autozone said the one I had was needing replacement, so maybe just one fresh one would be enough, but it seems fine with both, and my left side has had 2 for years.

Does it also happen when you press the brake pedal?
I get the same sound when going over bumps and when i press the brakes.

My pads also have 1 of the springs on each caliper. I thought that it needed 2, but everywhere i looked it only showed one.

I have the same metallic clang noise on my driver's side ever since I changed my front pad and rotors with powerstop about a month ago.

I replaced the W clip that came with the new pads with one OEM clip but that didn't correct the issue.

Good to know that I should just need to install another on those pads and the issue should go away!

thanks much!

my left side axle cotter pin rattles over bumps. I bent it a little more once, but not enough. It's more of a ping ping ... ping.
