The High Desert 100 w/ Yellowstone Off-road Racing

This race was a total blast, located in Powell, Wyoming it wasn't too far from home and boasted an awesome race course for 4628.

We showed up Thursday evening giving us all day Friday to pre-run, and get the car dialed in for the 3.5-mile course we had to do 10 laps on.

This course was fast with big g-outs, whoops, banking turns, and a few tabletop jumps. Basically what our car is more suited for.

9A0A0864

Pre running went well, we started off easy but by about lap 4 of pre-running, we were finding a good fast pace. The car was doing well but the front definitely did not have enough dampening in the shocks, felt super soft and the rebound was super fast. I was worried we blew them and lost shock fluid and pressure.

After pre-running we checked over the car, noticed the front two coilovers had small leaks and our suspicions were correct. They were still working ok but definitely not near as good as they could. Figures, after 3 hard races on the most recent rebuild it was bound to happen. We also bled all the brakes as we were having crazy rear brake bias and this helped a lot.

That night we were hit with crazy winds, up to 65-70mph gusts that made good night's sleep hard to get but the campers all survived and nothing blew away so all was good!

We lined up to race at around 1:30 pm and were off the line at 1:45 and we pushed HARD all 10 laps with zero issues. Pacing the green Boyds truck most of the race, losing about 5-10 seconds a lap on them. We couldn't keep up suspension or engine wise but we did our best. Lapped a few cars in our class and finished 2nd overall

We were also greeted with snow in the middle of our race... that was a first for us!

Overall, really fun race and we are stoked for the U4 Race in Broadview, MT in June!

Video coming soon!

Yes, this race appears more suited to your build. Glad you finished in good shape both placement and mechanical! If any videos will be glad to watch!
That mostly bizarre rock crawling stuff doesn't do much for me or the rigs, boring!

Ready for the Big Sky 200 with Ultra4 and Yellow Stone Offroad Racing.

Shocks have been rebuilt and revalved by our friends at Rockware with the help of Locked Offroad. Fronts are back to 8" shafts and now on a 800lbs spring.

Really excited to see how it rides. We are now also able to run much lower pressures in the shocks. Used to be running around 250 psi and current setup we are at 100psi. Excited to see how it does pre-running and mess with it from there.

Here she sits after some tom foolery.

Excited for this one, tune in this Saturday to The Big Sky 200 (Broadview, MT) North series | Ultra4 Racing to watch the race live!

Marlin Crawler RCLT HD

Well, the time has finally come. We have been wanting to get this suspension under the truck for a very long time.

We are in the process of installing the Marlin Crawler +3.5" RCLT HD Long Travel Kit and some other goodies to continue to take this truck to the next level.

If you are interested in reading more about the kit go check it out here.

So many switches! Gotta love it.

So this is Marlin's 3.5" kit not their 2.75" kit?

Got everything buttoned up. Not an insane amount of work. By far the hardest part was the steering rack as it required a good bit of modification to the motor mounts outside of passing the bolt through the lower control arm mounts.

We got all new factory hardware for everything that came out and needed to be reused. So new diff mounts/bolts, upper control arm bolt, and a few others.

Everything went back together smoothly.

The front end handled great at the most recent race. Recap coming soon.

Wild West 100 Race Recap.

This years YORR Wild West 100 was a good time, gnarly course but a great break-in for the new RCLT HD kit.

We showed up Thursday night with friday as a pre-running day. We had a very small amount of work on the car to button up when we got there, check fluids, reinstall front diff skid and just go over everything to make sure we didn't miss anything on final assembly.

We got everything buttoned up and headed out for some laps around the 10ish mile course.

This year we ran reverse of last year so the first part of the course is a fairly fun but slick hill climb that has some blind crests. No big deal, just need to remember course directly over the rises to carry good speed through it. This would prove to be a bottleneck on race day.

The course winds up the hill and opens up on the top. It was much rougher than it was the previous year, but the new front end and most recent tune on the Locked Offroad shocks were handling it very well. The main thing we were noticing as we made our way around the course was how deep all the ruts were and noticing where all the solid axle vehicles were dragging their axles and plowing dirt. We were able to ride the tracked out ruts and have good traction while you could see a few vehicles were having to push through the deep sand and silt to keep their axles from dragging and spinning tires. IFS advantage for sure, and the clearance on the RCLT surely helped here.

We made a good clean lap and rolled into pits to check everything over as this was the first good miles since the rebuild. Only finding a couple of small things, we snacked a bit and headed back out for some final course marking and testing with a more aggressive pace to find g outs, corners, obstacles of importance. We were making a really good time until we noticed a clunk coming from the rear end. It was in sync with drivetrain rotation so we jumped out and inspected the driveshaft, ujoints, felt the axle housing to see if it was in the axle. We noticed the passenger side rotor hat had separated from the rotor. The trail gear breaks we run have a two-piece design which is kind of a bummer and the bolts had backed out/sheared off. We pulled the rotor, shut off the line to that caliper and made it back to pits.

We didn't have a spare rotor so we kept the line clamped and just used the left break to run the whole rear axle, which worked well with the spooled rear end. The disc brakes had no issue stopping the car. So we ran without it!

The night before race day.

I have been waiting on some photos from race day but the photographer there ended up working a forest fire so I haven't been able to get them yet. Will update this with them when I can.

We shot off the line in 7th place and set into a pretty aggressive pace to make time on the leaders. This course has very little opportunity to pass so moving quickly and getting up behind people to find your opportunity is a must. We made a really fast time on the car in front of us. They ended up getting stuck on a sandy climb with no way around them and had to push them through it and they let us pass right after. The next few cars were making good time and had a good pace. The majority of the lap was cruising by and all we were seeing was residual dust from those in front. Till we suddenly round a corner and the next 3 cars were right in front of us. One stuck on a sandy climb and the others working their way around them. We made time on the two who got past and past the one who was stuck. That means we are in 5th before lap 1 was even over. We kept our pace and pushed on.

The track opens up for a bit and we pushed harder. This is when I noticed on full droop in the front right I could hear a binding/clicking and feel it a bit in the wheel. First thought was a broken limit strap and the CV axle was binding up. Thankfully it didnt seem terrible and we were able to baby it the next 3 miles and get into pits.

They found a broken clevis mount and had it swapped out in about 5 minutes and we were back on course running hard. We had to pace up a good bit to make time on the leaders. We were blazing through the course and the car was handling it very well. We were feeling good about our pace and hearing about a lot of other vehicles that were dropping pace or having mechanical issues. This race had high attrition last year and I expected it to be the same. So we decided to pace down a bit and find a groove.

About 2/3rds through the second lap we were hearing a metallic light clunking sound on the rear of the car. It sounded light enough to not be a major component so we kept pushing on. Till I started to feel like the rear of the truck was getting sloppy. First thought was a flat tire. It was walking side to side a bit but no sounds. We pulled off and Will jumped out to check. No flats. So I told him to start crawling around the rear end and look for anything weird. I shifted into reverse and the whole body shifted. I knew immediately the upper link or mount had broken or had play. Will saw then that the whole upper mount had ripped out of the frame.

At this point, we did a quick inventory of what we had and deemed it stupid to keep racing so that we could keep the car in better shape and do less damage before Ultra4 Nationals.

We called it there and started working up a recovery strategy.

We ended up using our spare tire strap and some other straps we had to center the rear axle and we were able to limp it off the course.

Here is where we sat and watched the rest of our race!

Here is the hole in the frame and the fix we did. This was also replicated on the other side as well.

Love reading your updates. I was considering the upgrade to the Koyo radiator since I'll be modifying my transmission cooler setup.

How is it holding up? Have you seen decreased temperatures with it? Was the thickness with the crossmember causing any issues?

never seizes to amaze me the amount of progress made on this car. I remember stumbling across this build a while back when I first picked my car up and was fascinated by this build. Well... it just keeps getting better and better.

Also some very good learning point to pick up regarding frame reinforcement in for the future build on my rig. Nicely done, keep it up, and best of luck in the coming races!

We actually are running auto parts store factory replacement radiators with no issues.

Thank you! Glad you are enjoying the build and are able to take some things away from our mistakes and hopefully some good knowledge sharing haha!

Ultra4 Nationals

Wanted to update everyone on the end of the 2021 Ultra4 Season finishing of in Oklahoma at Nationals!

We started this trip by heading all the way out to Virginia for Overland Expo East. It was fun to show off the racetruck out east.

The second race on the Marlin Crawler RCLT HD Kit!

After expo we boogied back west and got setup at Crossbar Ranch for the race. It was pouring rain all night the day before so we were met with a muddy mess!

I didn't take many pictures during this race but it was a freaking blast.

We pre ran the first day in a buddy's razor which was awesome and eye-opening to how brutal the course was. The brand new razor which usually feels like clouds were extremely rough bouncing around the course. It even struggled pretty hard in a few sections which looked easy just due to how slick it was. It took us almost 2 hours to pre-run one full lap which was supposed to take us a little under an hour on race day. So that was intimidating.

We took our notes and thoughts and tinkered on the car a bit to get it ready for race day. We also took the car out for a lap through the faster section to shake everything down before the race. The car ran great, minus a terrible new rattle that we came to the conclusion of our roof separating from the main structure which is only held by adhesive. This noise was OBNOXIOUS, even in a racecar haha.

Final prep of the car before qualifying!

Qualifying went pretty well for us, it made us realize how hard everyone was pushing. We pushed the car really hard and landed ourselves a 6th place spot 15 seconds off P1.

We took what we learned pre-running and gauged the pace at qualifying and got ready for race day! We made the decision to push hard but still be conservative.

Lining up on race day we were a little more nervous than usual, probably because our car is a lot faster than it used to be and we were in the mindset to shoot for a podium finish and if not break the car which normally is the mindset of lets make sure we cross the finish line in the time limit.

When the flag dropped we took off! We pushed really hard through the first "desert lap" and then paced down as we hit the rock lap. By the time we were going into the rocks we had made it from 6th place to 2nd. There had been a few flat tires and a couple pit stops in our class so easy passes! The only person in front of us in our class was Brad Lovell in the new 4600 Bronco which is a freakin beast of a car!

We took what we saw and paced down just a bit as 4 cars had already had issues. We were then caught and passed by John Snell in his Jeep but we didn't let it get to us. Kept a decent pace and kept pushing. The rocks were technical and the wide 4Runner did not make it easy. Line choice was super important in all the rocks and we really only had 1 or 2 feasible options with each obstacle so I was hyper-focused on hitting our marks and driving smooth.

There was one obstacle we had planned on bypassing as it was causing people a lot of trouble in pre-running and that was this massive, big wet waterfall. It basically was a greased-up wet ramp you had to shoot up at an angle. If you didn't make it up you slid down sometimes sideways and hopped you don't roll. We came around the corner before it, looked at it and I just laid into the gas and launched up it! The 4Runner rocketed up the wall like it was no issue and we cleaned it in a couple of seconds. Even Brad in the new Bronco had to take multiple tries at the wall. So that felt really good and gave us some time on P4 behind us.

After that section, we were caught and passed by Brian Macnamara who later blew a tire and had a steering issue who we then passed again. We knocked the second desert lap out and took home a 3rd place podium finish!

The car came home with a few new scars from this one.

You can also see the blown-out fender in this photo. (I was also excited because we stopped in Texas and I picked up a new to me KTM 350 SXF)

A great weekend overall and a great way to wrap up the season!!

4th Place in National Points overall for Sherpa Motorsports' first Ultra4 Season!

Way to go team!

Now to get ready for the 2022 Season and King of the Hammers!! Lets go!
