Frame rust repair

So I finally set up the appointment to have my front rad support fixed and then started looking around the wonderful internet world for more information about all the other 4runners with that extra rust package Toyota was so nice enough to offer.

I saw a few posts about getting the frames fixed under the recall like the tacomas but it didn't seem to go anywhere but I did see something interesting on another forum. Someone said that some dealers have been good willing frames for the 4runners and it was up to the dealer to make that decision. This was in 2018 so fairly recent.

Anyone heard anything about this?

Same here! Im supposed to drop mine tomorrow to get the rad support fixed and of course today I decided to call Toyota. She said I would get a call tomorrow but who knows. I also asked about the now expired dash board replacement since the original owner didn't do it. Why not try double my luck with them!

Good luck, and please update with what they say on both.

Well as expected nothing. She told me (in a very cute voice I might add) basically to f*** off nothing they will do on either.

I did call the NHTSA and she took my info and said the investigation is still open into them.

Gonna drop mine off to get fixed today and then make some time to clean the rest of the frame and coat it with something. The guy whose gonna do the welding for me has 3 Tacomas, 2 early 90s and a fairly new one. He says use old transmission fluid not oil and i will say his frames look good

Yea - unfortunately were all SOL.

My 03 rusted through at the radiator support and between the driver and rear tire. I think even though the investigation is going on, practically its gonna be difficult to prove a problem over 15 years. I think the majority of 4r in the owners in the NE have moved on to other vehicles.

Project farm is a youtube channel and he does a rough quick review of rust prevention. Might be worth a watch

Yeah frickin toyota. Maybe some day they will do a recall but doubt it. Our trucks are so old they will most likely just buy them back though but if i remember correctly they were semi generous with the prices.

I'm thinking that im gonna just paint it using some type of accessories paint like I used on my roof rack. Then I will flood the inside of the frame with either fluid film or take the advice of the welder and use transmission fluid. And coat the outside also.

I think using regular paint will make it easier to repair if it chips and if it starts to bubble and rust underneath i can clean it easier. Maybe some pof 15 in had spots.

I will try snap a few pics of one of the guys Tacomas when I pick mine up.

Although mine was a one owner he put very little miles on and it sat so the plastic trim is worn and the rust is an issue.

Toyota at least did something with their trucks unlike Ford and Chevy. My son and I replaced the back half of his 04 Ranger frame a few years back because it was rotted so badly. Luckily a local junkyard was having used ones brought up from the South. No talk whatsoever of them replacing frames. There were lots of cracked frame Rangers for sale on CL for awhile here. Is that an excuse? No of course not but seems the norm especially with the junk they put on the roads.

It would be nice if they covered them like they did some Tacomas. Funny thing is, I looked at a 02ish Tacoma with my other son a few months back. It had a new frame installed at some point and the frame looked good. Too bad the cab was ready to fall off because there was nothing left of the cab side mounts.

I think they were kinda forced too but idr. Really wish they would do the 4runners but I think with what I just did today and maybe some attention to the rear I should be good for awhile.

I think im gonna lighty clean the frame and get the big pieces off coat the rough spots with pof15 then just paint the rest. I was taking a better look while it was up on the lift. My main concern is how thin the frame might be on the inside.

Also do the transmission fluid in the inside and maybe out.

It does look good overall but who knows.
