Do you have an old caliper you can take apart?

Hi,

I am looking for a picture of a caliper that is taken apart... like the two halves of a sandwich. Why, you ask? Because... I am curious how much meat there is and where the fluid passages are. Obviously, there are some pictures on the internet of calipers in this state of affairs. But, I couldn't find one from a 4runner, much less the larger size caliper from a 2003 V8.

So, if you find your curiosity aroused, please take one apart and post a picture.

Thanks!

P.S. Yes, this has to do with wheels. But, not the common issue already posted about in these forums... that will be a whole another issue worthy of its own post.

How much meat is there?
-Enough
Where are the fluid passages?
-The path is only on the one side with the pistons for the rears. You wouldn't see anything with it split apart.
The fluid enters through the brake line and enters a void behind the pistons. They most likely have a narrow single channel with an o-ring that jumps to the other side for the fronts. I would assume they are separate since we commonly get just one side seizing.
There is also a small pass for the air valve to enable the bleed procedure.
Everything else is solid. It is a cast part so the fact that it is two pieces would typically just be to simplify the mfg process.
Edit* I was able to find this image of a similar setup. looks like just one crossover passage*

I'm guessing he's trying to figure out how much material he can take off to reshape the calipers to fit his wheels.

I would guess the same. meaning he probably wants to see one with the pistons removed.

Yes, I want to see how much I can take off. I don't need much. I started with cleaning up the excess casting. It is enough for the wheel to spin but barely a sheet of paper. I drove to work two days (64 miles) so far no problem. But, I'd like another millimeter or two. I added an arrow to the picture from UrbanRunner651 to show what part is in question. Unlike people putting 17" wheels onto the smaller brakes (seems they need to help the outboard side of the caliper) my problem area is the ends. In my case, they are 17" wheels from a 2019 Tacoma.

You are wasting your time IMO. I had a top mechanic work on an old caliper up on the lift off a 2005 SR5 and it took hours, and he failed, and said get him a new one.

Here's what I got at Amazon for $68. Fit perfectly.

With calipers, new or remanufactured is the way to go.

it's been working a year now. He did a total brake job. Old caliper was 15 years old.

I appreciate the input, but this thread is not about replacing my caliper. My caliper works fine, and is a reman oem installed by the dealer last year.
