Transmission fluid change question 2005 SR5

I have a 2005 SR5. The dealer changed the transmission fluid (and filter?) at 100,000. The T dealer charged me over $400 8 years ago, but I have no idea what was done - but know that the dealer has the right "speciality" equipment for tranny fluid changes for 4runners.

The 4runner now has 144,000 miles and shifts great.

I want to have (or do it myself) a mechanic I know at a good shop with 10 lifts drain 2 (or 4) quarts of Toyota brand ATM, and fill with exactly 2 0r 4 quarts.

I have the nonserviceable 4runner V6 tranny, but it has a drain and fill plug.

Can I do this "my way"? I've heard others have done this.

I bought this fram filter change kit from Amazon, but I want to do a full tranny drain at 230,000 miles - not this year.

Read what users/customers of this FRAM AM product say for yourself. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1

No reason not to do a full fluid exchange on your own at home. It's easy and will cost about $70 for three jugs of Maxlife. There are some good writeups on this forum on how to do it.

And you don't need that filter kit. You don't have a filter, you have a stainless mesh screen that can be cleaned with brake cleaner and reused.

if there is only ~44k miles on since the dealer replaced the fluid, there is no need to do a drain & fill now. but if you feel the need to do it, yes, you can just drain teh trans & fill with the exact same amount that comes out... IF the dealer filled it to the correct level.

as was mentioned above, no need to change the filter, almost every write up ive read on here said the filter (screen) was perfectly clean. most say the pan magnets were very clean too so no real need to drop the pan for the filter. do a fluid change at ~ 200k if you dont beat on it & its working fine the fluid is probably perfectly fine for quite some time.
