Leaking Transmission Fluid V8 (Seal)

Hey guys, curious if any of you have had to replace the Front Pump Seal in your V8Runner? Mine is a 2003 and super clean southern owned with 182k miles. Just noticed the smell of hot trans fluid the other day then noticed a good drip of tranny fluid coming from the flywheel inspection plate area of the bellhousing. A good reputable shop here that do a lot of work on toyotas said it was this seal no doubt. I didnt think it was a common issue but funny thing is the local dealership had a BUNCH of these deals in stock for the 4.7l And the parts guy said that usually means it's a hot item in their parts department to keep them stocked.

So, your mechanic is implying that the transmission input seal is leaking? Sometimes they're also called the transmission pump seal. I'd think the engine rear main seal is more apt to leak than the trans input seal so I learned something new today. Is there an inspection plate that can be removed to confirm the leakage using a mirror and a light?

Yes there is an inspection plate on your bellhousing front side. (You will need to remove the skid) and Exactly, When I first seen the drops leaking pretty heavy I first thought Rear main seal but its not all. It's pure Transmission fluid. And yes i believe some people call it a few things, I.E. Front Pump Seal, or Torque Converter seal. The positive note here is that the trans fluid still looks very good and no shifting issues or "burnt clutch" smell so hopefully I caught it in time. Dropping it off in the A.M. to let them pop in the new seal as well as a rear main since they will already have it exposed.

When I replaced the center diff actuator o-ring I also replaced the transmission output shaft seal. It wasn't leaking, but it was really brittle and fell apart when I took it out. I've been worried about the seals on the other end. I have an '02 with 198K, and that was last year.

Well that sucks, sorry to hear that. Hopefully, you won't get the run around with your mechanic.
