Suddenly blowing hot air (no AC)

07 4th gen SR5 4WD V6 160k miles

The AC is suddenly blowing hot air. Compressor does not appear to kick on or try to engage. It worked great yesterday morning, blowing cold as ever. During the afternoon, nothing. This make me think its not pressure related.

A few weeks ago the AC light blinked a few times, but then stopped and its been working fine since. I swapped out the relay with the foglight relay and it still isn't working.

Magnetic clutch?

I dropped it off at my mechanic as I'm going to be out of town all weekend. Just bracing for what it might cost.

Thanks!

Its the dreaded evap core. Seems to be a problem on these trucks.

$1200 including a new heater core and new blower motor sounds like a bargain from my local guy after looking at how much work is required.

Independent shop, chain, or dealer?

If you sprung a freon leak the compressor will not kick in. Have you put gauges on it to check high/low pressures?

I replaced a 12 year old compressor in my 2005 4runner and AC pumped cold again.
Cost was $198 (new Denso) + $200 installation by experienced AC tech included recharge and evac system so as not to ruin new AC compressor by Denso (sold by Amazon)

All the rest of AC is OEM. SR5 2005 145,000 miles V6.

Tech put dye in system to find leak and drove for two weeks...

Yeah they charged and tested with dye on mine as well. They could not find the leak anywhere and he suspected it was the evap core. He was right.

Very highly trusted independent shop in Las Vegas. I just got it back yesterday and they did a great job. Total damage was about $1300 but I had them include a new blower motor & new heater core while they had it all apart.

If the unit does not start and there is no corresponding hum, disassemble the compressor only after checking the voltage. An indicator is ideal for this purpose. If there are phases, it is advisable to check the fuse, which also often fails. If the fuse blows again, there is a possibility of a short circuit in the system. There is a possibility that the motor has severe mechanical damage. Operating under heavy load, overheating, or voltage fluctuations are the reason why the unit fails. So you need to contact a good handyperson. Good luck
