My take is Scotty is a smart fellow, most mechanics, especially at a dealership would start throwing parts at the issue and it would end up costing you a arm and a leg in the end and most likely still not fixed, as they say,... if it ain't broke don't fix it...at least until it broken for sure!

I agree. The hardest to find issues are those intermittent ones. Eventually they will fail completely then they can be identified. One just hopes it's only one issue and not a cascade of them and of course; it fails at an opportune time and not rush hour on the way home on a Friday afternoon.

Car is burning oil and he didn't inspect spark plugs nor checked compression (let alone borescoped cylinder walls)?

Quite a mechanic...

This isn't the first time he has worked on this 4runner. He said it burns oil because of high mileage and neglect over the years.

So don't do proper diagnostics and don't fix it?

It's like your doctor tells you're no longer a spring chicken so no point of curing that fever or tooth ache.

He diagnosed the issue I believe a year or two ago. Like I said, this isn't his first time working on this 4runner, they are a customer of his.

I'm not going to bother adding this comment on YT because it will just get buried in the other thousand comments, but I think it's worth pointing out that the trac control and VSC lights on DOES NOT mean that ABS is disabled. There's a separate light for ABS being off.
Also not sure why he didn't check (or make mention of previously checking) the A/F and o2 sensors regarding the P0430 code, since they are the two most common culprits and are listed in the FSM as items to inspect.

I think Scotty is like those kitchen cheffs on TV, he shows the recipe but there's always one or two secrets there....
Also I guess he records his videos quickly in one take and for brevity he doesn't go over 100% on what he has done.

I've found Scotty's inflammatory youtube video titles are often in need of ALOT of context to validate...

He's saying he "wouldn't fix it", he really means "I'm not going to fix it right now"

It's just that with social media BS, the latter meaning doesn't get the views... people get all inflammed about "WHAT! YOU'RE NOT GOING TO FIX THAT 4RUNNER!" and watch the video to the end and say "oh, yeah, that makes sense..."

So while his channel is okay, I generally don't waste time watching his videos because an ounce of common sense dictates the summary of its content.

It's called “click bait”. I’ve found most of his titles to be hyperbole. However, I he seems to really know his stuff. Since I live in Houston I’m going to try and take my T4R to him the next time I need a repair. I tried taking it to him to get see if he would look at it and do a diagnostic. But he told me he only looks at vehicles that actually need a repair. He’s too busy to see if a car is truly running good or not.

I've only watched a handful of his videos mostly because his voice makes me want to punch a baby. I'm an Eric the car guy fan.

Scotty's my man, but I like Eric the car guy too. I guess my issue with either, and maybe it's an experience thing, but I have yet to see either one of them touch a torque wrench.
