4th Generation - Fan mode actuators

My fan mode actuators are making a terrible buzzing sound every time it switches positions.

I found a youtube video where a guy changed his mode actuator motors, but it seems like a big PITA.

I was wondering if anyone has had the grinding/buzzing sound from the mode actuators and have tried to change them theirselves.

I have 2006 4 Runner.

Thank you.

Yeah I have a clicking sound behind my dash but not all the time. I'll deal with it when it breaks. The part is only like $100 from Toyota but yeah the job is a pain, probably 3-4 hours. If you do a search here there's a thread with a good writeup with pictures. Good luck!

I got the same problem… I really should have had Toyota deal with it when they did my cracked dash replacement under warranty.

I’ll probably deal with it when it breaks. It used to bother me more but after the roof rack and mud terrains, it’s so noisy that it has decreased in priority. I suggest turning up the radio and just keep on truckin.

I have the same issue with mine. It only blows cold air at the head option, and buzzes like crazy. There are two small motors that are a pain to access, but there are a few threads on here that explain how to do the job.

Here's what you'll need:
Part No.: 87106-35180
SERVO SUB-ASSY, DAMP

and

Part No.: 87106-35120
SERVO SUB-ASSY, DAMP

I will be doing this fix in the next month or so once it starts getting colder. I live in Florida, so only having cold air hasn't been an issue thus far..

FWIW, mine has started clicking but cycling through the other vent options on the controller* stops the click, at least for that trip.

* Is it a knob? A button? A knutton maybe?

I just replaced both of mine without removing the blower motor i used a screwdriver bit attached to a 1/4" drive to get to the screws that mount the servos It took me maybe 45 mins but i've had mine off several times now trying to find a no heat problem. Needless to say i'm getting pretty efficient. good luck
