Actuator Failure Rear Hatch Won’t Stay Closed. I found a Shoelace?

I have the dreaded rear hatch actuator failure. It was not staying closed. I sprayed a bunch of T-9 Boeshield in the mechanism and got one more day out of it until it froze up again.

When I pried the little cover off I saw what looked like insulation. I snagged with my knife and when I pulled it out it looked like a shoelace!!?!?!?

I yanked the shoelace a couple of times and it has worked perfectly ever since.

Is this factory????

If it fails again I am going to follow the cleaning procedure this guy recommends (video will not imbed from an iPhone, I tried everything, including going on a desktop and doing it the way that definitely used to work! Also I can’t see the attached image. Ever since the site update and latest iPhone updates everything has gone wacky):

I replaced my actuator and the new one had a shoelace attached as a manual release for the latch. I left it attached and tucked it inside the door.

Was it a piece of string or the plastic from the end of a shoe lace?
When I bought my '03 Sport it had a piece of plastic around the latch. The fixed part on the bottom of the tailgate opening. After a few years it fell of and the rear door began rattling. I have since cut a small piece of hose to replace them on all my trucks.

I keep trying to get the pic to work. It keeps going away, even though I put it up from a desktop. Is there a size limit for attachments? No matter what I do, I can't attach the Pic, I even shrunk it to 137 KB. Still didn't work. I could PM you the string pic, probably not worth it now.

@admin Any Ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!
