Krypto's 06 2uz, the Sinister Bambi Slayer

This will be my build thread on my very new to me 2006 Limited 2uz 4wd. I don't have expansive plans for this 4runner however I will document repairs, mods, and experiences while I drive her. It's a commuter, family vehicle (3 kiddos), and occasional offroader (usually on vacations)

I'm also on Instagram @Kryptowerkz

Rough idea of where to go is based off previous experience with 4runners.

Smooth Suspension Ride: I drive it every day so I am going with a front and rear suspension coil that is progressive.

Completed:
Bilstein 6112/5160 shocks
Eibach 700lbs springs
HD rear springs

Total lift is about 2.5" in the front and 1.5" in the rear

Stereo:

Atoto Android double din HU

Yet to do:
NVX 5 channel amp 100x4 plus 300x1
MB Quart 6.5" components front and rear
MB Quart 10" shallow mount sub

Armor:
Complete:
Front Bumper NWTI open top plated front
ARB belly pans

Currently building:
Rear Bumper True North rear tire carrier

Yet to do:
Sliders
Winch

Performance (it's a slug not a ferrari, but smiles per gallon!)

Completed:

DT shorty header, stock cats, URD Ypipe
AIP bypass
Quad Projector Retrofit (rx350 with SiR lens/d2s5.0, quad high/low)

Other:

Completed:

Remote Start
Refinished rims
Rustproofing

Possible mods:
Snorkel
Roof Rack
Soundproofing
Seat replacement

Paint is from Magnet Paints. It's called Chassis Saver and it lives up to its name. I used it on my 3rd gen a while back and it has stood the test of time and Michigan's blue $*IT.

Pics from the exterior frame sealing

Frame as it was

Post Cleaning:

After it's been painted:

Tips:
#1: Do wear long sleeves and safety glasses. I used a variety of cleaning and painting methods and none are to be done in shorts and a tank top.

#2: This paint if it gets smeared into your skin, will only come out when it's good and ready to. See #1

#3: Take your time. There's lots of nooks and crannies that will be difficult. I used a grinder (wire brush attachment), wire brush, and seal scraper for getting rust off. I think it took around 6 hours for prep.

#4: Use a good degreaser. I'm sure there are alternatives but I used the stuff pictured above. It works pretty well as you can tell from the cleaned pictures. It also sets up a good painting surface after it dried up

#5: Have lots of cheap brushes. You wouldn't be able to reuse them anyway so why bother? Get the package of brushes on Amazon for like 7 bucks or something. You can also use foam brushes although they are more likely to leave stuff behind when the paint gets a little thicker

#6: Gloves for painting! See #2. This stuff will be all over your hands from painting around everything that is attached to the frame.

#7: Don't forget the interior of the frame. The only thing that is worse than rust you can see is rust that you cannot see. There will be a follow up post when I get to that stage.

Definitely liking where this is going, and look forward to following your build progress as the "sic mods" (queue the 3rd gen crowd) continue. Keep on keeping on!

Right now it's a transitional period while instill have time to research and shop around. Luckily I have a couple of generous friends that will let me di stuff in their garage. Towards the top of the list I can't wait to get rid of the xreas stuff. It's not functioning as it should and is basically set at max ride level which I know will probably work it's way down over time.

Solid. It's a fun stage, that's for sure! Luckily, Black Friday and XMas is coming up and you should be able to score some deals in the next couple of months, especially for your big ticket items...

I am definitely looking forward to Black Friday. I don't necessarily like the time frame that I would be installing (since I'm outdoors) but I would definitely like the prices. I'm trying to keep everything around 5k this go around. Then I can slow down and do little stuff when I get some time to wrench.

Exhaust system looks like it will be a necessity. I have a slight tick so that will likely be a shorty DT set with high flow cats from Magna and then a walker SS setup. $1500.

Leaning towards a Dobinson 2" front end (torn about the shocks, I'm very familiar with the Bilstein 5100 setup and ran that for years without issue. Very good ride on the 3rd gen). Front bumper is a necessity.

Again Dobinson on the rear with the 2.5" variable spring rate for empty rear ends. I am planning a rear bumper which would probably knock .25" out and then if I was towing I could expect another .25" to .75" drop.

Total on the suspension is right at $800 with either the Bilstein shocks or the Dobinson ( I like the Dobinson rear shocks a little better but I really like the idea of adaptability up front to after the bumper is on to get the right ride height.

Lights will be the black housing set on Cramazon from Anzo or Akkon and an HID hi/low setup from Morimoto with the improved glass. ($400). I was very spoiled with these in my 3rd gen and the stock setup in the 4runner pales with my 3rd gen.

I'm really leaning towards Coastal Off-Road for everything armor since there is a price savings and it gives me the chance to customize in the build without going through any great lengths to do so. Total for Front/Rear bumper and a skid plate set is just under $1500 and I would be getting around to welding them up throughout the winter. Hardest part would be ensuring that they don't rust quickly but some thick primers and a good topcoat will likely take care of that issue. (another 100 bucks)

Tires are going to be a Falken Wildpeak A/t3 I think. At $172 a tire that puts me under $900 for a full set with the warranty. Not bad. Still looking though. There's also a Grabber Apt at $179 a tire that's interesting. I've enjoyed my grabber AT/2 although those are not very available in the 18" rim size.

Stereo upgrade will be a step by step improvement type movement. I'm starting with an Android HU (Atoto off Cramazon) and if that doesn't fit the bill I'll go on and put in a small 5 channel amp and replace the speakers. Android runs about $260 and the rest of the system is another $500 with the new amp. Everything has to fit in the stock locations. I'm not doing crazy interior mods just to get a stereo in. Wiring is always KnuKonceptz (their wiring is awesome).

Dash cam will be $200 bucks from Cramazon. I've had a great experience from Rexing and it's really not that hard to add in plus plenty of good feelings of having a dash cam.

Weather Techs are a necessity for any 4runner in my opinon. Still shopping around to beat the $300 mark but if I must I must.

I'll be adding one of the new slick 6 or 8 gang panels at some point. I only want to do the wiring once so I imagine that I will have 3 for lights (plus the fog lights) and then I'm going to do an auxiliary back up light set mounted in the rear bumper. The stereo comes with a backup camera too which will be a plus.

Rain Deflectors are a want and provide a tiny project for the future.

I want to paint the calipers and that's another small project for the future.

For towing I'll be adding a brake controller with the stock harness but that can really wait till next year. It's not a must have at the moment.

Inclement weather lighting (for my country roads) will be covered by a smaller light bar setup (Amazon most likely after re-sealing them and fogs will be converted to a projector setup from morimoto.

Mud Flaps - still looking for a larger set but I haven't run into any that really grab my attention. I custom made the set for my 3rd gen out of some semi flaps.

There will be lots of pictures on the wiring portion. I am particular about this stuff and I've never had a big problem with any kind of stock wiring overload because it is all separate. Thankfully even with the big ol v8 in there I can go with a group 31 battery and I have enough 0 ga laying around to do the big 3 upgrade along with it.

The nice thing about the 4th gen is that a lot of the upgrades that I did to my 3rd gen are present from the factory. I don't see a whole lot of upgrades beyond this coming down but this should keep me busy for a while.

^^^^ Wicked.

We share similar tastes! I said the same thing when I bought mine - there were quite a few upgrades I did to my 3rd that the 4th already has!
Can't wait to see this unfold.

It should be a good time lol! I'm hoping I can weld up the bumpers at my inlaws or my parents garage. Those need space while you're building them and doing all of a bumper in one day is a rather daunting task so storage is needed as well. Anyhoo one step at a time.

FYI My Anzo lights have clearcoat failure after 14 months of use. For the added cost of the Anzo's over the other cheaper lights, I doubt you get your extra money's worth. I sure didn't. If I could do it over, I'd probably put some kind of protectant on the clear housings.

I used T-taps and heat shrunk the connections to do the halos. The connections they give you in the box don't work as well, and I had issues with them in the rain until I switched to the T-taps.

I was going to use halos from morimoto. I've had experience with them and are pretty high quality but I am also no stranger to tearing cheaper products apart and making them better.

Since this is my first go around with plastic headlights do you have to buff them more often without the clear or did they crack. Just curious.

Color Choices

Seems like I have an odd color. I've been considering colors to do some accenting with in the spring (when the stuff will actually dry). I'll be adding some photos from my phone momentarily since I always seem to fat finger on my phone.

There won't be any monstaliner full paint on this one since the factory color is in great shape. I just want to do the armor, mirrors (since they always catch rocks, and maybe the front lip of the hood. If you're paying attention throw in your two cents. I've got the full color set from Monstaliner so I just laid them out on the hood for comparison.

The first pic is if all the colors and the other is with the ones I'm thinking are good possibilities.

I have a set of OEM housing retrofitted with Morimoto D2S. Let me know if you’re interested and we can work out a deal. I’ll be keeping an eye on your build. I’m interested to see your bumper set up since I’m having a hard time decide some for myself.

At this point I need to take a look at the stock housings and see if I can make some customizations to them that I would be happy with. I have a set of led strips I can run across the bottom. If i can successfully use those as turn signals and paint the interior i might just skip the housings and modify a stock set with some morimoto goodies. I did fairly well with the stock housings from my 3rd gen. It all depends on how well the 4th gen housings come apart and everything.
